Well, thanks to a LinkedIn post from Avalanche Studios executive producer Travis Day, we now have confirmation of what we can expect. For some, this news is devastating and for others it’s a welcome game type that will provide countless hours of online fun and fantasy. Yes, the next game Avalanche Studios are working on within the Hogwarts Legacy franchise is going to be quite different from the first installment.
Is Hogwarts Legacy 2 Getting A GTA Online-Style Mode?
Grand Theft Broomstick Online
Travis Day confirms in his post that, having sold over 40 million copies of Hogwarts Legacy, they’ve decided to build a dedicated team to produce an online RPG. This doesn’t necessarily mean that a single-player Hogwarts Legacy 2 adventure isn’t coming, as this may be an adjacent project. Some fans are hoping for a GTA V and GTA Online scenario where both game modes complement each other.
Over on Reddit, the fan base is divided over an online-style MMO RPG set in and around Hogsmeade. Some are fearful that the next game will be online only with all the cash trappings of season passes and loot boxes, while others are hopeful that this will be a companion mode to a stellar single-player adventure. One such Redditor had this to say:
I could see them trying to pull a rockstar and do a hogwarts legacy multiplayer mode built into the engine of a single-player game. I know there are a lot of people that are big HP fans that have asked for an mmo-like hogwarts experience for a bit. If they can pull off a fraction of the success of GTA Online, people will eat that up.
Fan Opinion Is Split On A Hogwarts Legacy MMO
Harry Potter And The Half-Baked Battle Pass
The opinions don’t stop there, with many fans being up in arms at the mere thought of an online RPG set in the Harry Potter universe. Some recall their experience with Harry Potter: Magic Awakened and worry that some experiences just aren’t replayable, which would lead to a dull repetitive grind, rather than a magical experience. With a Hogwarts Legacy 2 release date all but confirmed, there’s reason to get excited right now about what might be around the corner.
We all remember how weird the single-player adventure Gotham Knights was with its rinse and repeat missions and enemies that took far too many hits. A game designed for online multiplayer trying to be a single-player game just doesn’t work well. Although, in contrast, any additional mode added to Hogwarts Legacy is usually a good thing. One Redditor had this to say:
This is exactly the problem I have with Harry Potter: Magic Awakened. I love that game, but at the same time, I also detest it so much, because too much of its content are either unreplayable or heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay.
Whatever happens next, we can but hope that both fan camps get what they want. C’mon Avalanche Studios…give us a single player Hogwarts Legacy adventure and throw in a free online mode while you’re at it. We’d all be ecstatic if an online mode was added as some free Hogwarts Legacy DLC. Now that would be truly expelliarmus!
