However, thanks to the arrival of NVIDIA’s brand-new AI-powered technological enhancement, titles such as Hogwarts Legacy are now welcoming a whole new look, and it is safe to say that fans have been left feeling divided over the major change.
Hogwarts Legacy Fans Aren’t Sold On This Graphics Update
Overnight, NVIDIA announced its DLSS 5 update, which includes “an AI-powered breakthrough in visual fidelity for games”. Set to launch this fall, the DLSS 5 will infuse pixels with “photorealistic lighting and materials, bridging the gap between rendering and reality”. Put simply, by using AI, previous titles such as Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, EA Sports FC, and in this case, Hogwarts Legacy will now look a lot more realistic. However, thanks to the involvement of AI, there is no denying that these new visuals welcome something of an uncanny feel.
In a video showcasing the before and after of some of our favorite games with the inclusion of DLSS 5, we can see that Hogwarts Legacy has undergone a major change by adding a lot more realism to some of the in-game models. I do not know about you, but it is clear to see that AI is at play here, and understandably, many fans are unhappy with this new update.
Hogwarts Legacy Isn’t The Only Game Using This Tech
Over on r/HarryPotterGame, fans of Hogwarts Legacy came together to share their thoughts on the NVIDIA update, and with over 200 comments racked up in just 14 hours, it is safe to say that they have plenty to say. “Looks like AI slop filter,” one user said simply. Another agreed, adding, “Legitimately hilarious that they invested billions in AI and are desperately trying to find a use for it to prove to investors that they didn’t waste a s**t ton of their money.”
User Super6689 said, “I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all. The vibe of Hogwarts Legacy is just gone with this,” whilst another’s comment read, “Nah, I think I’ll stick with what the artists intended their own game to look like because this is garbage.”
As an avid hater of generative AI, I cannot help but agree with these comments, and think that the arrival of DLSS 5 is a major step back for the video game industry. Before long, games will no longer have an identity or a unique feel to their art, and will instead be based on AI programs that have stolen work from real, hardworking, and dedicated artists. Hopefully, this strong criticism will convince NVIDIA to make some changes to this new update ahead of its launch this fall.
