Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s ending gave Ivo Robotnik an emotional and heroic death, with his grandfather, Gerald (also played by Carrey), dying in space. The fates of both characters suggested that audiences may have seen the legendary actor play Sonic’s archnemesis for the last time, especially with Metal Sonic entering the equation.
Still, theories have run wild since Sonic 3‘s release and Sonic 4‘s announcement about how Carrey could stick around. Robotnik could have survived the explosion somehow. He could have cloned himself as a backup plan. The actor could play another one of Ivo’s relatives, or he could even be a different version of Ivo introduced through time travel or the multiverse. But there’s only evidence for one option being considered for Sonic 4.
With Carrey’s return as Robotnik now confirmed, unused concept art for Sonic 3 now looks like it holds the true explanation for how this is happening. The answer appears to be that Carrey will play a future version of Robotnik who rules a post-apocalyptic world.
This belief stems from artwork that Paramount and the Sonic 3 team commissioned Tacit Sign Studio to design. Multiple pieces of concept art were released online a month after the threequel was released showing ideas used in the movie like Ivo and Gerald’s fight in space, Ivo seeing Knuckles and Sonic in his hideout, Team Sonic meeting with Commander Walters, and Team Sonic trying to survive a black hole bomb.
But there were also images for scenes that didn’t make it into the movie, including what looks to be alternate ideas for Sonic 3‘s post-credits scenes. One shows Metal Sonic standing next to Ruler Robotnik in what looks like his throne room, with an apocalyptic, future city in the background.
While this scene wasn’t included in Sonic 3, it’s clear from the concept art that this was a direction the creative team was considering. Now that we know Carrey is back, the likelihood that this art and the alternate credits scene idea will be fully realized in Sonic 4 is much higher. And its amazing to think it’s been floating around for over a year.
The explanation for how Ruler Robotnik factors into Sonic 4 becomes apparent. There were already theories that Metal Sonic had time-traveling powers or that Sonic himself accidentally traveled to the future. Regardless of which of those paths the fourth film takes, either would allow Carrey to return as this alternate/future version of Robotnik.
The Sonic 4 teaser backs up this belief, too. Just look at Robotnik’s dialogue in it once again. He talks about “your” world and time coming to an end, suggesting that neither is his. If he is from the future or even a future-like alternate universe, then that would be true.
In any case, the likelihood of Carrey returning to play a version of Robotnik who is a glamorous and powerful king is quite exciting. It’s a completely different characterization of Eggman that will make him feel distinct and fresh. It would also prevent undoing the surprisingly effective death of the franchise’s original Ivo.
It’s understandable, then, why Carrey would agree to come back for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The chance to play Robotnik as a ruler over all and who is as powerful as he’s always imagined is too good to pass up. It could make for the best and most evil portrayal of the villain in the franchise so far.
