Based on Lorenzo Carcaterra’s novel of the same name, the 1996 film chronicles the lives of a group of male friends in Hell’s Kitchen, beginning in the ’60s when a prank goes awry, and they’re sent to a juvenile detention center, where they endure various abuses and tortures from the guards, particularly Kevin Bacon’s Sean Nokes. During their adult lives, the group’s paths cross again when an encounter with Nokes forces them all to confront their trauma in a very public forum.
In honor of the film’s 30th anniversary, Warner Bros. is re-releasing Sleepers digitally in 4K Ultra HD and on 4K UHD Blu-ray Disc on April 21. With just over a month remaining until this new release, ScreenRant is proud to present an exclusive clip from the film’s bonus feature, “The Making of SLEEPERS: A Conversation with Barry Levinson,” in which writer/director Barry Levinson breaks down the extents the production went to in order to faithfully depict 1960s Hell’s Kitchen and the Wilkinson Home for Boys in Upstate New York. Check out the exclusive clip below:
Featuring an ensemble cast also including Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Billy Crudup, among many others, Sleepers was a modest critical success, turning around Levinson’s streak of misfires that began with the Robin Williams-starring Toys just four years prior. It also proved to be a box office hit at the time, grossing over $165 million against its $44 million production budget.
While some of its cast have since become A-list talent, the legal drama notably remains the only collaboration for many of its stars, as well as with Levinson. For De Niro, Sleepers was the first of four different movies made with the Oscar winner, including the infamous 2025 crime biopic flop The Alto Knights. However, Crudup marks a rare instance of reuniting with De Niro on a later project, being cast in his second directorial effort, The Good Shepherd.
10 Best Barry Levinson Movies, Ranked By IMDb
Barry Levinson has had great acclaim as a director but which titles stand as his best movies according to the scores on IMDb?
Despite its success at the time, Sleepers has largely become something of a cult classic in the 30 years since it came out, and a forgotten gem for many of its stars. Part of this could be chalked up to the controversy both the film and its source material have encountered over the years about the story’s supposed true-story basis, which Carcaterra has confessed to largely fictionalizing. However, its darker subject material and lack of availability on streaming have also been factors in narrowing ongoing discussions about the film’s qualities.
With Sleepers now making its way to both digital and physical platforms in its 4K remaster, it will not only get the chance to find new life, but also may very well get a new streaming home in the near future. With Paramount having won the battle for Warner Bros., and announcing that HBO Max will be merged with Paramount+ upon the closing of the deal, the studios may wait until such time to make a decision. On the other hand, they may just wait until a certain window after the new 4K release’s debut to bring it to a new streamer.
