Marathon is steeped in lore, and likes to hide its mechanics behind diegetic codex logs. The explanation for Silk, however, will pop up the first time you view your Reward Pass—if you overlooked the explanation, you can click the question mark button in the bottom right while in the Reward Pass screen to see what it has to say about Silk again.
Silk Is Spent On Marathon’s Reward Pass
Silk is the currency used to progress through the Reward Pass, Marathon‘s version of a battle pass. The Reward Pass mostly provides cosmetics to work toward—skins, charms, etc.—and has a free track open to everyone. The premium rewards require purchasing the premium Reward Pass, which is included if you bought the Deluxe Edition of Marathon.
The Deluxe Edition also comes with 200 Silk included, giving you a head start on the Season 1 Reward Pass.
Keeping up on the Reward Pass is important for those who don’t buy the premium version because it contains Schema. Unlocking a Schema lets you purchase a specific weapon from the armory, though there is a limited number of vouchers per Schema. It’s a bit of a convoluted system, but it’s just one way to acquire some of Marathon‘s more powerful weapons.
How To Get Silk In Marathon
The only way to earn Silk in Marathon is to increase your season level, which is simply an indicator of how much XP you’ve earned. Season levels will reset with the next mandatory seasonal wipe, which will presumably bring a second Reward Pass. Very basically, all you have to do is play Marathon to increase your season level and earn Silk; you will earn 10 Silk per level.
Keep in mind that there is a Silk cap—you can only hold a maximum of 140 at any given time. Be sure to regularly spend Silk so that you don’t waste a season level by being at the Silk cap when you level up. If you bought the Deluxe Edition and got the included 200 Silk, your balance will temporarily be above the cap until you spend your Silk. Silk is presented alongside Credits and Lux as one of Marathon‘s three currencies, but it’s essentially accrued passively by playing the game. Just keep going on runs, and you’ll earn Silk to spend in the Reward Pass.
