Invincible Season 4 Quietly Recasts An Original Character

Prime Video’s Invincible has a lot going for it, but the list of actors involved is especially impressive. Invincible‘s cast is led by the likes of Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons, and Gillian Jacobs, but supporting figures include Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Sterling K. Brown, Seth Rogen, and Clancy Brown. Even Invincible‘s minor, one-off roles are typically filled by A-list actors, with past guest spots from Kate Mara, Ella Purnell, Jon Hamm, Simu Liu, and many more.

Given the size and scale of Invincible‘s enviable cast, it’s unsurprising that some characters have found themselves recast along the way. Todd Williams inherited Titan from Mahershala Ali, Eric Bauza took over from Ezra Miller as D.A. Sinclair, and Jonathan Groff was replaced by Luke Macfarlane as Rick. One benefit of having a voice-only cast is that switching actors isn’t always obvious, especially for those with a talent for vocal gymnastics.

And so it proves in Invincible season 4, as a character who has been part of the show since season 1 subtly changes actors.

Zachary Quinto No Longer Voices Robot In Invincible Season 4

A man of many names, Robot (also known as Rudolph, Rudy, or Rex, depending on the episode) has been a mainstay of the Invincible cast, forming a new version of the Guardians of the Globe in season 1 and remaining as one of the show’s main superheroes ever since. During that time, Robot has fallen in love, created a new body, quit the Guardians, rejoined the Guardians, and changed his name in tribute to a fallen friend.

Because Robot wears so many metaphorical hats, voicing the character has traditionally been split between multiple actors. Throughout most of Invincible‘s past three seasons, Robot was voiced by Zachary Quinto, while Rudy/Rex out of his mechanical suit was voiced by Ross Marquand.

Known for portraying the logic-loving Spock in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, Quinto’s monotone, emotionless delivery perfectly suited Robot, capturing Rudy’s scientific mindset alongside the mechanical inflections of his orange battle suit. Having two voice actors created a separation between the superhero and the boy behind the robot, giving Robot more authority as a Guardians of the Globe member, while simultaneously affording Rudy more empathy and humanity.

In Invincible season 4, however, the character is entirely voiced by Ross Marquand, regardless of whether Rudy/Rex is inside the Robot suit or not. The change is largely unnoticeable, with Marquand doing a solid job of replicating Zachary Quinto’s performance to maintain that distinction between Robot and Rudy/Rex. Marquand is something of a vocal chameleon. Despite being best known for playing Aaron in The Walking Dead, the actor is also an impressionist. He seamlessly replaced Hugo Weaving as the MCU’s Red Skull, and also plays a raft of other Invincible characters, including The Immortal.

Why Zachary Quinto Isn’t In Invincible Season 4

Neither Prime Video nor Zachary Quinto himself have explained the actor’s absence in Invincible season 4, but after watching the opening three episodes, it’s clear that the focus is more on Rudy/Rex than his superhero alter ego. With the orange Robot suit only getting brief outings, it perhaps wasn’t worth Quinto returning for a few lines here and there, especially when Ross Marquand is perfectly capable of performing both sides of the character.

It’s also worth noting that Zachary Quinto is currently starring as the lead in NBC’s Brilliant Minds (where Quinto also serves as a producer), which is currently in the midst of a 20-episode second season.

And since Quinto hasn’t officially departed Invincible, his absence isn’t necessarily a permanent thing. If a future situation demands that Rudy/Rex wear his Robot suit constantly, it’s entirely possible that Quinto will slip back into his old gig. Until then, however, Ross Marquand will be the man responsible for bringing this pint-sized Iron Man to life, suit or not.
