Rumors recently surfaced that the live-action Booster Gold series had quietly been cancelled, following online activity of showrunner David Jenkins having deleted past posts about the project from his social media feed, as well as allegedly unfollowing James Gunn on Instagram. When a user asked Jenkins on Threads if there was “any truth to the rumors that you have left the Booster Gold pilot for the DCU?,” he replied with, “As far as I know it’s still in the pipeline.”
At a further inspection, Jenkins is following Gunn on Instagram and Threads at the time of this story’s publication. See below:
Jenkins was first revealed to be working on the DCU’s Booster Gold TV show back in July 2025, when the Our Flag Means Death creator boarded the series to pen the pilot. Beyond the script order, there have been little to no updates on the superhero adventure ever since, but that doesn’t mean it has been cancelled.
Booster Gold was one of the many projects unveiled during DC Studios’ original DCU: Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” announcement in January 2023. Over the last two years, it has been heavily rumored that Kumail Nanjiani is playing the titular role, but there has been no confirmation on that.
Centered on Michael Jon Carter, Booster Gold will explore a superhero who comes from the 25th century and goes back to the past (which is the present time for the DCU), following his fall from glory as a once-promising football athlete. With the use of advanced technology, he becomes Booster Gold, hoping to get fame in a new way.
Jenkins’ Booster Gold series isn’t the only DCU TV show in the works, as DC Studios is still developing the Wonder Woman prequel series, Paradise Lost, as well as a spinoff for Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller. The next live-action drama from Gunn’s franchise will be Lanterns, which premieres in August on HBO.
Booster Gold, if it goes forward, would most likely air on HBO Max.
