However, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ended with Robotnik going through a redemption arc, while seemingly sacrificing himself aboard the Eclipse Cannon. This makes his return somewhat unclear, as he delivers a threatening voiceover in the trailer signaling he’ll be a villain. However, a 2003 Sonic game may hold the answer, confirming a major twist for his character in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
Sonic 4 Hints Jim Carrey’s Robotnik Isn’t The One We Know
At first glance, it already doesn’t make sense for Robotnik to be the villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. His arc with other characters in Sonic 3, from his grandfather, Gerald, to Shadow the Hedgehog, showed he was willing to sacrifice himself to save the world. It’s unlikely he’d go back to his villainous ways after making such a grand gesture.
Instead, Sonic 4‘s trailer suggests the Robotnik showing up in the movie won’t be the one from the previous trilogy. His monologue in the title reveal trailer opens with, “You think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out.” This threat seemingly places Robotnik as from a different world than the people he’s talking to, which is presumably Sonic and his friends.
If that’s the case, then it’s likely the Robotnik who appears in Sonic 4 isn’t from present day Earth. The mention of time hints at the Time Stones, a key element of Sonic CD, where Amy and Metal Sonic first debuted. But another, more recent Sonic video game hints that the Robotnik heard in the title reveal trailer might not be Robotnik at all.
Instead, it’s quite possible Metal Sonic is masquerading as Dr. Robotnik, stealing his identity and pretending to be him in front of Sonic and his friends. While Metal Sonic already revealed himself during Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s post-credits scene, there’s already video game precedent for him to also disguise himself as the doctor who, in the games, created him.
The 2003 game Sonic Heroes saw Sonic and his friends battle Dr. Eggman across various stages, all trying to stop him from a plan to conquer the planet. However, the final story of the game reveals the Eggman everyone had been fighting was Metal Sonic in disguise. In reality, Metal Sonic had overthrown his creator, taking over the Eggman Empire for himself.
As the second phase of his plan, he fought Sonic‘s major characters while disguised as Eggman, copying their lifeform data by examining their various fighting styles. This allowed him to become stronger, using the doctor’s identity as a rouse to copy all the strength of Sonic and his friends. This same formula may be adapted into Sonic 4.
Why Sonic Heroes Is The Perfect Tie-In For Sonic 4
Including elements of Sonic Heroes into Sonic 4 makes sense, considering Metal Sonic is a major villain in the game. It would also elevate Metal Sonic as a threat, since he’d not just be fighting the titular protagonist, but also trying to copy data from every other character in the story. It would also make for a perfect twist to Carrey’s Robotnik performance.
In terms of Sonic the Hedgehog villains being major threats, Metal Sonic’s final transformations in Sonic Heroes could serve as the perfect movie climax. After copying everyone’s data, he turns into the monstrous Metal Madness. Then, after fighting everyone, he becomes his most powerful form, Metal Overlord. This would be the perfect final fight in Sonic 4.
Although nothing has been confirmed as of writing, it would make sense for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to have Metal Sonic embody his Sonic Heroes rendition. This includes him being Robotnik in disguise, keeping the doctor’s original redemption arc while also maintaining his presence in the story — with a fitting reference to the video games.
