John Billingsley On Dr. Phlox’s Perspective Of Star Trek: Enterprise Crew

Star Trek: Enterprise‘s John Billingsley offered his hilarious take on how Dr. Phlox felt about Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and the NX-01 Enterprise’s chances to survive Mankind’s first intergalactic voyage. Star Trek: Enterprise ran for four seasons on United Paramount Network (UPN), and the prequel once derided as “the show that killed Star Trek” has become more popular, thanks to streaming.

Dr. Phlox was one of two aliens aboard the NX-01 Enterprise, along with Subcommander T’Pol (Jolene Blalock). Phlox was a Denobulan, with John Billingsley embodying an all-new and eccentric Star Trek species. Dr. Phlox was patient with his human friends, but he may not have thought very highly of them in Enterprise‘s early days.

At Trek Talks 5, which has raised over $86,000 to benefit the Hollywood Food Coalition, John Billingsley was interviewed by Ian Spelling for a spotlight panel about Star Trek: Enterprise and Billingsley’s acting career.

When asked about how John approached Dr. Phlox’s inner life that wasn’t in Star Trek: Enterprise‘s scripts, Billingsley amusingly called Phlox’s human pals “a bunch of yahoos” and considered the Denobulan doctor to be on “a suicide mission.” Read John’s quote below:

John Billingsley: “I don’t know if this is exactly an answer, but I will say for me, Phlox was on something of a suicide mission. Yeah, because I mean, here he is going off to explore space with a bunch of yahoos that he has every reason to think are probably going to screw it up. I mean, Earthlings, really? Oh boy.

But I think Phlox, and I think this is possibly for me, my way in, was thinking, ‘I have led a lovely life. And I’m a representative of a species that has sort of a relaxed attitude to the time we’ve got. [In] my time, I’ve had a family, I’ve had adventures. If this is the way I go out, what a way to go. So, I think he was playing with house money from the jump… Remember, Phil Phlox, you’re playing with house money.”

John Billingsley’s perspective on Dr. Phlox is both funny and fascinating. When he joined the NX-01 Enterprise, Phlox was an experienced physician who was on United Earth as part of an inter-species medical exchange program. Captain Archer selected Phlox to be his Chief Medical Officer, and the Denobulan cheerfully came aboard Earth’s first Warp 5 starship.

When factoring in John Billingsley’s background work, Dr. Phlox becomes even more interesting. As ignorant as humans were about the dangers of deep space, Phlox, perhaps rightfully, didn’t expect Captain Archer and his crew – including himself – to survive the NX-01 Enterprise’s voyages.

Dr. Phlox already lived a full life, and he approached life on Enterprise with a “Well, we’re probably gonna die, and that’s okay” attitude, according to Billingsley. For Dr. Phlox, the joy truly was in the journey, but he didn’t think Enterprise would have a particularly long or successful journey, at first.

The misadventures of Captain Archer and his human subordinates in Star Trek: Enterprise season 1, especially, bore Dr. Phlox’s expectations out. Archer and his crew had a chip on their shoulders about the Vulcans telling them what to do, and they preferred to make mistakes and learn from them rather than heed the knowledge and experience of T’Pol and Dr. Phlox from the get-go.

Star Trek: Enterprise celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026 as a beloved Star Trek series, contrary to how the prequel was low-rated on UPN and dismissed by longtime Star Trek fans. Just as Captain Archer and his crew proved they weren’t “a bunch of yahoos on a suicide mission,” Star Trek: Enterprise has defied expectations and is more popular than ever.
