To quote one character from Your Friends & Neighbors season 2, this series is “missing a reason to exist.” Between its overstuffed ensemble of hit-or-miss characters whose greatest common denominator is that they are wildly insular, hypersexual, and embarrassingly self-important, it’s still unclear even after two seasons whether this show is a satire of the wealthy elite or just another vapid soap opera in disguise. Either way, it’s mostly ineffective, forgettable, and worst of all, mildly entertaining, despite season 3 already being confirmed.
Your Friends & Neighbors’ Unlikable Characters Are Hard To Invest In Despite Their Star Power
Once you get past what might be the most skippable main title theme music on the streaming platform, which remarkably earned the series its first and only Emmy nomination, this is what happens: you’re stuck in the affluent suburban neighborhood of Westmont Village, modeled after Westchester County, NY. There, you’ll find dozens of uninteresting, middle-aged married couples behaving like teenagers, drinking heavily, committing adultery, and doing just about every other cliché thing in the “how to be rich with a midlife crisis” handbook.
What’s most disappointing about this series, which nearly began as a present-day American Beauty in season 1 before losing sight of its intriguing premise, is how hard it tries to be emotionally relatable to viewers while also being culturally tone-deaf. If most of the characters are meant to be out-of-touch caricatures of capitalism and materialism, why give so many of them sitcom-esque storylines that try to appeal to viewer sympathy? Besides Hamm’s Coop, it’s confusing from the start whether we’re expected to like a lot of these characters.
It’s not so much that the characters in Your Friends & Neighbors are unlikable because they’re wealthy and performative, but it’s more so because they inflate everyday problems into colossal dilemmas that lack immediate stakes or legitimacy, like toddlers crying for attention. This may work for some viewers more attuned to sheer melodrama, but some may find that far too many scenes feel like you’re stuck in a conversation you’d like to get out of. To put it plainly, there just aren’t enough fulfilling things happening over 10 sizable episodes in Your Friends & Neighbors season 2 to warrant a worthwhile investment or emotional response from audiences.
Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Is An Unfocused Mix Of Loose Satire & Bougie Soap Opera
Compared to a series like HBO’s Succession, which maintained a firm identity for four seasons and always remained firmly rooted in its satirical tone, Your Friends & Neighbors fluctuates too frequently between critique and embellishment, creating a perplexing mix. It invites you to its lavish party but makes you feel annoyed, rather than impressed, by the grandiosity of the venue and its guests. Hardly anything feels genuine, even though there’s so much effort into curating something that feels authentic. It’s reflective of Apple as a tech giant worth over $3.7 trillion, establishing itself as a home for prestige television, and churning out yet another luxurious product in the form of a Jon Hamm series.
It would be overly harsh to say that Hamm is too good for this series, but there are moments where you may find yourself thinking about his past performances in all-time greats like Mad Men and Fargo and feel like there’s a lot left on the table in Your Friends & Neighbors. It’s not that Hamm is dialing it in by any means, as he’s truly one of the few reasons why this show could be worth sticking with. It’s more about the ostensible fact that he’s not being asked to do much else than portray a less misogynistic Don Draper with a better mind for modern times. For fans of Hamm who love everything from Baby Driver to his Mercedes-Benz commercials, he’s the only marketing push you really need to press play.
For a show labeled as a crime series, perhaps the greatest crime is how much of an afterthought the show’s original hook ends up being.
The addition of James Marsden as the billionaire Owen Ashe in Your Friends & Neighbors season 2 is also a plus for the series. He and Hamm make a great onscreen pair, and just about all of their scenes together are exciting due to their combined star power. Olivia Munn returns following the aftermath of season 1 in one of her career-best performances, as does the entire Cooper family, for better or worse. For a show labeled as a crime series, perhaps the greatest crime is how much of an afterthought the show’s original hook ends up being. Calling Your Friends & Neighbors a true crime drama series would make Walter White turn over in his grave.
Your Friends & Neighbors Season 2 Is Watchable, But It’s A Step Back For The Franchise
Your Friends & Neighbors is not necessarily unwatchable, but it really misses the mark when you start thinking about how good a show it could be. All it would really take is a sharper plot with more heightened crime elements and fewer episodes with less insignificant side quests. There’s simply not enough going on in the series that is in full service of the story, which makes a good chunk of it feel like passable filler. As season 2 plays out, it starts to feel like there wasn’t much of a throughline with the original Your Friends & Neighbors concept past season 1. If it weren’t for Hamm, I doubt this series would have legs or much ground to stand on moving forward.

Where we end up by the end of season 2 is fine, or good enough, but it’s not at all what one may expect based on the show’s premise. This makes watching the show ultimately feel like an unrewarding half-baked bait and switch, like buying an expensive item and immediately having buyer’s remorse. As a Mad Men lover and big fan of Jon Hamm, I really wanted to like this series and hoped it would improve on its adequate first season, but it just became too consistently frustrating and was an overall disappointment. It’s not a major disappointment, but it’s still a letdown because it’s trying to be too much of everything and not enough of one thing. A crime series starring Jon Hamm should be just that – not in addition to a lukewarm social satire, a corporate workplace drama, a dysfunctional family sitcom, a messy romantic soap opera, a tragic melodrama, and all the other things that Your Friends & Neighbors season 2 shows glimpses of being, but never fully commits to.
