After experiencing a major resurgence with Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, Costner has continued to explore the Western genre, recently partnering with Morgan Freeman to executive produce The Gray House. The eight-part series landed on Prime Video on February 26, arriving at an exciting time in the Western TV landscape.
Now, following its binge release last month, The Gray House stands as the ninth most popular title on Prime Video in the U.S., as of writing. The Western series beats The Wrecking Crew (2026) in tenth place, and falls just behind the Liam Neeson-starring Blacklight (2022) and Prime Video original series Fallout.
The Gray House, which follows four women who use their position as part of the Underground Railroad to become spies for the Union during the Civil War, arrives as Taylor Sheridan continues his strong hold over the Western genre. Sheridan just recently premiered Marshals, a Yellowstone spinoff series, starring Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton.
Costner, of course, was a central part of Yellowstone for most of the show’s run, but exited the series for its final season following reports of friction with Sheridan. Costner reportedly left the show to focus on bringing his Horizon: An American Saga passion project to life, the first installment of which released in 2024 and was a major box office disappointment.
Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 has had its festival premiere in September 2024, but an actual release date for the sequel remains unknown, as does the status of the planned third and fourth films, which are reportedly facing financing trouble. As Costner struggles to finish his Western movie saga, Sheridan is showing no signs of slowing down.
As new episodes of Marshals continue to release weekly on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+, Sheridan is gearing up for the premiere of The Madison, another extension of the Yellowstone universe. This series, a neo-Western like Marshals, features a stacked cast that includes Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer, and is sure to be a big success for Sheridan and Paramount.
Westerns may be struggling on the big screen, but the newfound streaming success of The Gray House speaks to the continued demand for the genre on streaming. Starring Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis, Hannah James, and Paul Anderson, the Prime Video series has been billed as a limited series, suggesting it’s unlikely to get a season 2.
In any case, there is evidently room for multiple Western projects in the world of streaming, with audiences willing to tune into Costner’s miniseries and Sheridan’s expansions of the Yellowstone universe. Though The Gray House succeeding on streaming isn’t going to move the needle on Horizon: An American Saga installments three and four, it’s clearly a win for Costner after his dramatic Yellowstone exit.
