Lin-Manuel Miranda Lands Perfect Movie Follow-Up To Andrew Garfield’s 88% RT Hit

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to direct a movie adaptation of the 2019 musical Octet, which was written by Dave Malloy. The internet addiction-themed musical, which is performed a cappella, follows a support group that meets in a church basement. Malloy will be writing the screenplay for the movie, in addition to executive producing alongside Diana DiMenna and 5000 Broadway Productions’ Johnny Holland and Owen Panettieri. The movie’s producers are Luis A. Miranda, Jr., 5000 Broadway Productions’ Julie Oh, and Best Kept Secret Productions’ John Skidmore.

Lin-Manuel Miranda: I haven’t stopped thinking about Octet since I saw Annie Tippe’s premiere production in November of 2019. Dave Malloy’s score is versatile, brilliant and grows more relevant with each passing year. It won’t leave me alone, so here we are.

I was utterly gobsmacked by his work on tick, tick…Boom!, and feel so honored to have such a beacon of the musical theater world bring this piece into a new life. At the time of writing, no casting announcements for the project have been made, though Malloy’s comments imply that several major cast members are already on board.
