With a game expected to be currently in development, fans over on Reddit are pondering what a modern open world RPG game set around Middle-Earth might look like. Would it be better served as a large-scale combat game similar to the Dynasty Warriors series, or would players benefit more from a thoughtful survival exploration adventure similar to Breath of The Wild or Tears of the Kingdom?
Lord Of The Rings Fans Are Hyped For The New RPG
Peak Hobbit Hysteria
With a new Lord of the Rings game now rumored to be in development by Crystal Dynamics and not War Horse Studios as first suspected, there is a lot of anticipation building for what type of game it could be. One Redditor who clearly loves WarHorse Studios and Kingdom Come Deliverance posted the following:
Am currently playing kingdom come deliverance and my gf literally just said “why can’t they make a game like this set in middle earth”
A tantalizing prospect indeed, although more and more fans are hoping for a game more similar to Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. An open world adventure with deep gaming mechanics and survival elements that reward player creativity and exploration. Quite frankly, a game that draws comparisons to the Zelda franchise is doing well.
Should It Be Like Zelda? Or Kingdom Come? Or Something Else?
Grand Theft Mordor?
With most fans pining for a Lord of the Rings game inspired by Zelda or KCD2, there are many others who have other ideas. Some want the detailed open world, DLC and side quest quality found in The Witcher 3, while others are hoping for a fully realized Middle-Earth where you roleplay as a particular grounded character similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. One Redditor really hit the nail on the head with how great a game this could be:
Technically one could use also some canonic events as basis for the story…say…civil war in Gondor the Kin-strife with the story milestones being these canonic events (like various battles like siege of Osgiliath, battle of the Crossings of Erui, or siege of Pelargir) or wars of Arnor with Angmar as setting using the various canonic events as the basis for story etc. In general it would be amazing to have a game with such level of detail like Witcher 3, or sandbox that could rival Red Dead Redemption 2 🙂
With no official word on who is working on a new Lord of the Rings game or details to go on, we’ve only got our wild imaginations to comfort us. Imagining the potential is enough to drive the internet into a fever pitch that could even rival GTA 6 fan hype. Me personally, I’d be happy swapping Kliff Mc Duff out for Aragorn and superplexing Saruman right into the fires of Mount Doom! Not sure if that was in the books, but it sounds good to me.
