Lord Of The Rings Open-World RPG Leak Teases The Perfect Developer

The Lord of the Rings is undoubtedly the hottest property in the fantasy genre, with millions of fans waiting in the wings to consume any new content that crops up within its universe, from TV shows and films, to sprawling video games.

That said, things have been pretty quiet on the gaming front in recent years, with Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War serving as the last really successful forays into that sphere (assuming we’re all happy continuing to ignore Gollum for the time being).

What we do have is confirmation that another game is on the way at some point, but details around what exactly it’s going to be like, and who is heading up the project, have been thin on the ground. That could be changing now though, with new leaks pointing to some hugely exciting news for the project.

Who Is Developing The Open-World Lord Of The Rings RPG?

If you aren’t sure what project we’re referring to, we know from reports in 2025 that the UAE had invested a massive $100 million in a new Lord of the Rings open-world RPG via Embracer Group, who currently hold the rights.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post (via the Resetera forums), which quotes Polish industry veteran Ryszard Chojnowski’s appearance on a recent podcast, in which he revealed that credible sources have told him that the studio working on the project is Warhorse Studios, famous for producing the Kingdom Come: Deliverance duology.

It’s a pretty stunning revelation, and a hugely encouraging one, given the fact that both of those games are seen as excellent examples of the genre, with a real emphasis on storytelling. At the same time, the obvious parallels between the medieval setting and the style of fantasy used in LotR make this a great idea on the face of it.

Warhorse Would Be An Incredible Fit For LOTR

The comments in response to the post were predictably very excited at the prospect, with one saying, “Almost a perfect fit… Walking around the landscapes and the detail in KCD games is hard to surpass. Can only imagine what they could do with Tolkien…”

“God I hope so. Middle earth with the amount of detail they put into their games would be a dream come true,” another added.

There are some caveats to the excitement, with the recent news that the studio fired a translator in favor of using AI a very big one. That said, they obviously have the chops to pull off a Lord of the Rings game as a studio, so we can only hope that they, or an equally capable equivalent studio have been put in charge of the project.
