Love Story Actor Teases “Difficult To Watch” Finale Of Carolyn Bessette & JFK Jr. Series

The story behind one of the most influential couples in the 90s, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, has been reimagined by Ryan Murphy for FX. The series Love Story takes place over one season as it shows how the two met, with Bessette working at Calvin Klein until she married attorney and publisher Kennedy Jr. in 1996. The two’s romance, life, and even fashion became the headlines of every newspaper until the tragic events in 1999.

In an interview with Decider, Constance Zimmer, who plays Ann Marie Messina, details the season finale and states it’s “going to be difficult for everybody to watch.” The ninth and final episode will presumably be about the tragedy that took the lives of Kennedy Jr., Bessette, and her younger sister Lauren in July 1999 when the plane Kennedy Jr. was piloting crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

Zimmer prepares the audience for the heartbreaking portrayal of the tragedy and how her character dealt with the events:

“I think we all know what’s coming. It’s just how we’re telling it. That’s the biggest thing you learn as an actor, is to never play the end, right? We read scripts all the time, we know what’s coming and our job is to not show that. So it is difficult because it’s a different emotion.

Because if I had that emotion — if I had that in my speech, let’s say that emotion would be far greater and far bigger — so you can’t. It’s almost like you get that information, and then it’s got to go away. You can’t think about it. It’s why I think [Episode] 9 is going to be very, very difficult for everybody to watch because it’s going to be — to me, that is what [Episode] 9 is for.

It’s for all of us to feel all the things that we have been feeling watching the show, and when everything happened, actually in real time back then.”

The series finale is expected to show a dramatized version of the events that led to the deaths of Bessette, Kennedy Jr., and Bessette’s younger sister Lauren. Despite being controversial due to some distant family members stating that it’s a distasteful series, Love Story has managed to captivate audiences with an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Due to the nature of the series, it’s unlikely another season will occur, but knowing Murphy’s love of anthology series, the next couple portrayal could be another notable love story or perhaps a not-so-love story like Princess Diana and King Charles. Muprhy has not made a statement about continuing the Love Story series further with more tales of heartbreak and romance, but it’s certainly a possibility.

Love Story is available to stream on FX and Hulu, with the season finale airing on March 26.
