Almost everyone who owns and plays on a PlayStation console in 2026 will have a PSN account, as it’s a requirement for even some of the most basic features available on the platform. Now, new information has revealed that, whilst the system itself won’t be going anywhere, the naming system will be gone for good quite soon.
PlayStation Is Going Through A Major Rebrand
As first reported by Tweak Town, a new email has emerged sent by Sony Interactive Entertainment that confirms the company will be phasing out the branding for both PlayStation Network and PSN by September 2026.
The important part of the email reads as follows:
“We’d like to inform you that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has strategically decided to phase out the terms “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” across our platform in order to properly capture the breadth of our evolving digital services.
The upcoming changes are purely visual and will not introduce any technical alterations to our offerings. To simplify and unify branding, the terms “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” will be phased out across all SIE assets by September 2026. All features currently associated with PSN, including core network features such as friends, multiplayer, and trophies, will remain unaffected and available to players.”
It would certainly mark the end of an era for the company, with the service originally launching all the way back in 2006 and remaining in place for the two decades since. That said, on a tangible day-to-day basis, players should remain unaffected, other than seeing some different branding when they login to their accounts.
What’s Next For The PlayStation Network?
The email didn’t go as far as detailing exactly what Sony intends to do next with their naming systems for the service, but given that the old nomenclature will be out the proverbial door by September of this year, we will absolutely hear about their full plans before then.
As mentioned in the email, they are trying to capture the increased scope of PlayStation usage in 2026, so we can assume the new name will try and reflect that as accurately as possible, with the platform’s ecosystem being used for a ton of different things, from gaming to streaming and beyond.
