‘Marshals’ Episode 3 Reveals a New and Dangerous Threat for Kayce

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Marshals Episode 3.With the exciting news that Marshals has already been renewed for a second season by CBS, it appears that this Yellowstone sequel spin-off has soared even higher than expected. This week’s episode, “Road to Nowhere,” continues to expand on the distinct conflicts between the people of Montana and the citizens of Broken Rock, as Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) finds himself caught in the middle. As the Marshals deal with a new breed of trouble, they quickly discover that having a badge is not nearly as isolating as being a Dutton with one.

This Week’s ‘Marshals’ Puts Kayce Between Montana and the Rez

“Road to Nowhere” opens in Billings, Montana, where Belle Skinner (Arielle Kibbel), going by her real name, Isabelle Turek, bets $10,000 at a casino. Whether this was just a quick scene to remind the audience of her real name before the action starts or a set-up for something more remains unclear. Marshals then pivots to two masked individuals who, under the cover of darkness, blow up a road, leading to the main conflict of this week’s episode. The next morning at Yellowstone East Camp, Kayce is greeted by Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty). Rainwater has recovered after being nearly assassinated on the Rez in the series premiere, though Kayce reminds him that the threat to his life is still out there. Nevertheless, the Broken Rock chairman is focused on the current threat to the Rez, as the local mine is set to break ground today. Of course, he already has a plan to deal with that…

Elsewhere, at Marshals HQ, Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) berates Kayce for his double life as a lawman and a cowboy, hoping that he will make more time to bond with his teammates. Kayce doesn’t see how he can find the time, but an opportunity quickly presents itself. Walking into their break room, Belle is tormented by Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means), who practice modern warfare around her. Kayce is quick to point out their flaws, which leads Cal to assign him to the unit for SEAL-style training. But while Kayce begins teaching the team the same tactics that he and Cal learned back in the Navy, they’re soon interrupted by the news of a conflict brewing on the Rez. Several trucks were halted on their journey to the mine site by the broken road. Taking the only other way through (which goes through Broken Rock), they are stopped by Rainwater and the tribal police. “You’re on reservation property,” Rainwater tells the driver, before claiming the trucks as their own.

Gearing up for their part in this, Cal shares that their role as federal agents is to make peace between the angry protesters on the Rez and the local cowboys trying to get their cattle to auction. The way to do that is by forcing the cowboys to go back the way they came. “When the locals see the feds siding with Broken Rock, we’re going to be pouring gasoline on a fire,” Kayce tells them. But that’s the job, and like the broken road itself, there’s no way around it. As the team gears up, they theorize who is behind the road closure. Cruz thinks it’s Rainwater, and Miles seems to concur, adding that this isn’t the chairman’s first standoff. When asked to elaborate, Kayce recalls the events of “Daybreak,” the very first episode of Yellowstone, where Rainwater used the Dutton’s cattle as leverage against them. When Cruz asks how that conflict ended, Kayce mysteriously responds, “Painfully.” That’s certainly an understatement.

Arriving at the backed-up Broken Rock road, the Marshals try to break up the crowds. A bunch of good ol’ boys first praise Kayce for arriving, but longtime Montana mainstay Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz) has other words for the Dutton heir. Kayce notes that the Cleggs have been around almost as long as the Duttons, with Belle adding that they never had the same level of local power. Randall gives Kayce a hard time about giving up the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to the Rez, but Kayce has none of it. If only exchanging insults was the worst to come out of this, but things go from heated to explosive when the Marshals try to get locals to move back the way they came, prompting a fight. Belle is spat on by someone who recognizes her as a Turek, and Kayce and Miles are both labeled as traitors by their respective peoples. When shots ring out at the Marshals and tribal police, the situation turns deadly. A young girl is shot in the crossfire, and so Kayce and Cal head into the forest to track the shooter responsible: a rancher named Dom Moore (Michael Reagan).

Back at HQ, Moore has been hauled in for questioning as the team wonders if he acted alone. Cal wants Kayce to speak to Rainwater about releasing the trucks from his captivity, but the cowboy lawman only believes that things will only escalate with him involved. However, as the “only person who can bridge the gap between ranchers and the Rez,” he has no other options. Meanwhile, Cruz tries to get Moore to talk. While the initial implication is that Moore is nothing more than a hate-filled redneck, he notes that all he cares about is putting food on the table for his family (and that he didn’t shoot anyone). Once again, the Rez has stood in the way of progress. Elsewhere, Belle and Miles feel defeated, lamenting that “Big Sky Country is all one small town.” But Miles believes that Kayce still took the brunt of it. “There’s really no safe move for Kayce in this one,” Belle remarks, though she has no idea how right she is.

On the Rez, Kayce meets with Rainwater and Mo, asking the former to stand down before someone else gets hurt. Rainwater believes Kayce is being hypocritical, as his own father once rerouted an entire river to get what he wanted (also in Yellowstone‘s first episode). But Kayce brings up Rainwater’s role in the cattle dispute that resulted in the deaths of his brother and brother-in-law. “The Duttons fought and bled fighting for their way of life, you can hardly judge me for fighting for ours,” Rainwater concludes. As this conversation is happening, Belle gets a ballistics report back that says three different rifles were fired at the roadblock scene — meaning that two other shooters are still out there. Unfortunately for Kayce, he soon finds himself in the crosshairs of another. As he stands to leave his meeting with Rainwater, he spots a truck that has passed by the coffee shop several times now. Just then, it returns and opens fire on the patrons there, with one man injured. Kayce gets behind the wheel and follows in pursuit, meanwhile Cruz finally gets the names of the shooters from Moore — brothers Carson and Wes Clegg, Randall’s kin — who hold the rock blasting contract for the mine near Broken Rock.

Although Kayce finds the truck in no time, he’s ordered to wait for the team before following the Cleggs into the nearby forest. Thankfully, it isn’t long before the rest of the Marshals arrive, and they head into the woods in pursuit. Branching off to flank the Clegg brothers, Kayce and Miles team up to gun after one of the suspects when the former is nearly blown up, sent to the ground in a spiral. Waking up in the firefight, Kayce draws in their fire as Miles uses the SEAL technique taught at the beginning of the episode to get the drop on Wes Clegg, apprehending the suspect and saving the day. Well, not before Kayce shoots Carson Clegg dead at the scene, whose body falls into a ravine. With a job well done, the team returns to HQ.

That evening, we see a different side to Cal as he struggles to take some sort of medication. Whether he’s abusing substances is unclear, but that’s what we’re meant to gather from the way he quickly hides the pill bottle before Kayce enters. Putting on a brave face, Cal apologizes for making Kayce use his relationship with Rainwater to their advantage and invites him to the bar to unwind. But Kayce wants the peace and quiet of the East Camp, politely declining the offer — but not before warning Cal to watch his back while out on the town. As is to be expected, the locals don’t quickly forget. Before they head for the Bullet ‘n Barrel, Belle reveals to Cal that Moore didn’t end up shooting anybody at all. Rather, the ballistics prove the Clegg brothers were the sole offenders. Talk about good news.

That night, Rainwater visits Kayce at East Camp. As the pair sit on the porch, which feels reminiscent of Yellowstone‘s final season, Rainwater admits that the day was a moment of weakness for him. In fact, both agree that they were exposed by the events. “I’ve spent my whole life being pulled in two different directions,” Kayce adds. “Felt like both sides were pushing me away today.” Although Rainwater ended the standoff and returned the equipment, he feels as if the whole operation was a failure. But the past is the past, and Kayce believes that he may have a lead on who tried to kill Rainwater back in the premiere, as the Cleggs have a big financial stake in the mine. But the conversation turns sour when Rainwater mentions seeing Monica’s shoes by the door. It turns out, Kayce bought the troublemaking stallion from last week’s episode for his wife before her cancer took a turn for the worse. “We need to stay in the fight together,” Rainwater reassures him, and, frankly, it’s nice to see the two of them bond more.

The new CBS sequel series follows Kayce Dutton, but what about his wife?

That evening at the Bullet ‘n Barrel Saloon, country artist Channing Wilson performs as Cal and the rest of the team wonder if some locals are about to jump on them at a moment’s notice. After Cal once again tries to squeeze some info out of the bartender, Maddie (Morgan Lindholm) — Marshals is very unclear if he has a past with this woman or if he’s just super interested in her — he sits with the rest of the team. When a couple of older cowboys make their way over to the group, the off-duty Marshals prepare for the worst. However, as it turns out, the cowboys instead buy the group a round of drinks, having been impressed by how they helped the girl who had been shot earlier that day. While that would have been a nice note to end “Road to Nowhere” on, that doesn’t seem to quite be Marshals‘ style. Instead, the episode ends with Kayce waking up in the middle of the night to find a lone bullet left on his porch. A threat for certain, but from whom? That’s the mystery.

Marshals airs Sundays on CBS and is available the next day on Paramount+,

Pros & Cons

  • Great character work between Kayce and Rainwater this week.
  • The Marshals dynamic continues to grow with interest.
  • Plenty of well-timed references to Yellowstone that didn’t feel overdone.
  • It seems odd that the Marshals weren’t tasked with retrieving the stolen equipment, and that Rainwater wasn’t actually investigated for blowing up a road.
  • Odd use of Michael Cudlitz here that makes us hope he’ll be around for more episodes going forward.
