Marvel’s Lowest Ever Movie Box Office Hero Is Set To Return To The MCU In 4 Months

Marvel’s The Punisher is set to arrive in theaters for the first time in 18 years this summer. Frank Castle has now graced the big screen three times, the first of which coming in the 1980s when Dolph Lungren brought the character to life. Now, the vigilante anti-hero is on the cusp of his fourth live-action film appaerance.

The character, who most recently appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Daredevil: Born Again, was seen in the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, coming up against Tom Holland’s web-crawler hero for the first time. Despite the popularity of the character, the Punisher has had somewhat of a rocky history on the big screen, with the anti-hero actually leading Marvel’s lowest-grossing movie in their history.

Marvel’s Lowest Ever Box Office Came From A 2008 Movie

Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle/The Punisher holding a gun in Punisher War Zone

Punisher: War Zone, the action thriller that arrived in theaters in 2008 as a reboot of the classic character, was far from the success that the studio wanted it to be. The film only earned $10.2 million at the box office, which is the least amount of money a Marvel film has ever earned.

This includes all Marvel films, not just those released by Marvel Studios and Disney, and dates back all the way to Howard the Duck, which is often cited as the first modern theatrically released Marvel title.

Punisher: War Zone stars the late Ray Stevenson, who joined the Star Wars franchise in 2023’s Ahsoka, as Frank Castle. The plot is akin to most other Punisher storylines, with Castle waging war against crime lords in the city. The villain is Jigsaw, played by Dominic West, and is joined by Julie Benz and Colin Salmon.

This film was not only a commercial disappointment, but a critical one as well. The film received 29% from critics and 42% from fans on the film rating website Rotten Tomatoes, and ultimately goes down as a forgotten about entry in the Marvel franchise.

Punisher Returns To The Big-Screen MCU This Summer

Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Now, The Punisher is set to come back to the big screen, even as previous attempts to bring the character to life in a live action film haven’t been very successful. This time, though, Punisher is a supporting player rather than leading the story, and is played by Jon Bernthal, who is a hit amongst audiences for his role as the vigilante. This is also the first time that the Punisher will appear in a PG-13 film as well, marking another key difference between this and previous titles he’s been in.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will also almost certainly make more money than War Zone, which made less than a third of its production budget at the box office. The last Spider-Man film, No Way Home, clocked in at nearly $2 billion worldwide gross, so it’s safe to say that the Punisher’s next movie appearance will be more successful than his last.
