Ecommerce marketplace Meesho has received an income tax demand of about ₹1,500 crore for the assessment year (AY) 2023–24, the company said in a stock exchange filing on March 7, adding that it will challenge the order.

According to the filing, the Assessment Unit of the Income Tax Department issued an assessment order under Section 143(3) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, along with a demand notice under Section 156. The order raises a total tax demand of ₹1,499.73 crore, including applicable interest.

The company said it is currently evaluating the assessment order and does not agree with the observations and adjustments made by the tax authorities.

“The company does not concur with the observations and adjustments made in the assessment order and believes that it has adequate legal and factual grounds to contest the same,” Meesho said in the filing, adding that it is taking necessary steps to protect its interests.

The company also pointed out that a similar tax demand had been issued for the previous assessment year (2022–23). That development had been disclosed earlier in its prospectus filed in December 2025.

In that case, the High Court of Karnataka had granted an interim stay on the demand notice through an order dated April 17, 2025. The matter remains pending before the court.

Meesho said the latest assessment order and demand notice are not expected to have any major adverse impact on the company’s financial position, operations or other business activities.

Founded in 2015, Meesho operates an ecommerce platform focused on value-conscious consumers and small sellers, particularly across tier-II and smaller markets. The company has been expanding its marketplace and logistics network as it competes with larger ecommerce players in India’s fast-growing online retail segment.

The tax notice comes shortly after the company reported a sharp increase in losses in the December quarter.

Meesho’s net loss widened nearly 12-fold year-on-year to ₹491 crore in Q3, compared with ₹37.4 crore in the same period last year, even as revenue rose 32 per cent to ₹3,517.6 crore.
