The long-running medical drama premiered in March 2005 as a mid-season replacement and has become the longest-running scripted primetime show on ABC. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the Grey’s Anatomy cast is known for having a high turnover and for launching the careers of successful stars such as Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo, and Katherine Heigl.
Chandra Wilson has played the role of Dr. Miranda Bailey since the show’s premiere episode, appearing in more than 400 episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and additional episodes of the spinoffs Station 13 and Private Practice. Wilson is the longest-running Grey’s Anatomy cast member, with her character portrayed as a tough but caring Chief of Surgery.
However, another Grey’s Anatomy era could be about to come to an end, with Wilson’s future on the show now unclear. Per EOnline!, with just two episodes remaining of the season, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital could bid farewell to yet another legend. Miranda is in hot water for covering for resident Benson Kwan after the latter administered an experimental hydrogel rejected by the FDA. While both Bailey and Kwan took steps to cover their backs, intern Spencer turns them in.
It’s unclear what the outcome of this will be, but, as Ben has already made clear to Miranda, she could face a hefty fine and might even have her license to practice medicine revoked. With Miranda set to face an investigation, this could pave the way for Wilson to become the third high-profile departure of Grey’s Anatomy season 22, after it was confirmed that Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver will leave following the season finale.
While more than two high-profile departures would seem excessive, Grey’s Anatomy has proven itself to be a show that does not shy away from reinvention. The series has had to evolve over the years, in both story and cast, and this is one of the reasons that has contributed to such a long and successful stay on the air.
There is no guarantee that Wilson will be leaving, but it would not be astounding for a show like Grey’s Anatomy to pull something like this. There have been a fair number of casting shake-ups in recent years, and this is all part of the show continuing to evolve and streamline. While Miranda Bailey will certainly be missed if she leaves, Grey Sloan has coped with high-profile departures before and will do so again.
