Considering the sheer number of shows that follow the same agency or heroic archetype, measuring a crime show’s effectiveness ultimately boils down to its storytelling. One of the most prevalent criticisms of procedural type of show is how formulaic they can be. That said, network TV 2025-2026 is proving that assumption wrong, as one of its biggest hits is having a solid year, releasing excellent episodes every week.
The Rookie Season 8 Is Having A Magical Run In 2026
ABC’s The Rookie has been a staple of Disney’s network since 2018. Created by Alexi Hawley, the show follows the law enforcers at Mid-Wilshire as they tackle weekly cases while also dealing with their respective personal dilemmas. The premise of The Rookie centers on FIllion’s John Nolan, who starts his police journey later in life. Since then, the series has diversified its storytelling, making it a true ensemble. On paper, The Rookie sounds like every other cop procedural there is, but one has to look more closely to appreciate how impressive its current run is.
The Rookie season 8 opened with an ambitious overseas premiere, with a Prague background. This is especially unusual for a network TV show, since they’re tied to their respective localities. Somehow, however, Hawley found a way to make the story work, and more impressively sell the idea to Disney for an increased budget. Since coming back from its European trip, The Rookie has rolled out a variety of wildly creative cases. “The Red Place” had a thriller aspect to it, as Nolan interviewed a suspect about a particularly twisty case; “The Network” featured the return of Aaron for a joint task force, and “Baja” saw Lucy Chen and Nyla Harper went on an undercover operation.
Amid all these varied weekly cases, The Rookie season 8 has also been actively developing the personal lives of its characters. Instead of the repeated conflicts, however, it continues to find new ways to challenge its people by putting them in fresh settings. Tim Bradford and Lucy are now living together, while Wade Luna Grey, as well as Nolan and Bailey Nune navigate a rough patch in their respective marriages.
How The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10 Solidifies Its Place As One Of The Best Cop Shows Right Now
In its latest episode, “His Name Was Martin,” The Rookie season 8 tapped into horror as a genre, with a case that required Nolan and his team to tackle an incident at Westview Psychiatric where its crew got exposed to chemicals that forced them into a violent frenzy. The outing felt like the crew found themselves in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies roamed around. In spite of that, the procedural didn’t lose its ties to reality, by also telling the traumatizing experience of Lucy during the whole ordeal.
“His Name Was Martin” elevates The Rookie as one of the best cop shows on TV because of how it seamlessly mixes other genres with the traditional police procedural fare. It’s easy to keep people interested in a 6-10 episode streaming series with just one case to solve. Being on network TV and having to produce more outings requires a different kind of consistency in writing to ensure the quality of its storytelling throughout its run. That’s what makes The Rookie season 8 so impressive.
