Nathan Fillion’s Cult Classic 14-Part Sci-Fi Series Quietly Lands American Streaming Resurgence At The Perfect Time

The Firefly TV show has been making the headlines in the last week, and the buzz is now spreading for it as the series is trending at #11 on Amazon’s VOD streaming charts. While having aired for a single season, it gained a cult following from 2002 to this day.

Created by Joss Whedon, the Firefly ending led to a follow-up project through the movie Serenity, while still leaving the audience wanting the story to continue. The show’s streaming surge is coming as the cast members have been raising hype for an upcoming announcement on March 15.

The major theory is that a Firefly sequel is about to be revealed, as the world of TV is constantly going through revivals and reboots. However, the other scenario many are imagining is that the actors are going to announce a rewatch podcast or potentially an audio drama to continue the franchise.

To this day, Firefly has remained a sci-fi classic and is remembered as one of the TV shows that got cancelled too soon. Currently, the series is sitting at 77% in the Critics’ Score on Rotten Tomatoes, while holding 96% on the Popcornmeter.

While several actors are coming together for this Firefly announcement, it raises the question of whether a sequel would happen with or without Whedon. Over the last few years, the director and writer were accused of allegations and causing toxic workplace environments on numerous projects, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to his revamping of Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie in 2017.

However, it’s quite possible that if a Firefly revival is happening in any capacity, it can certainly happen without Whedon. It has been proven with the upcoming Buffy sequel on Hulu, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising the role of the iconic heroine, with Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman operating as showrunners.
