Netflix is making way for a major sequel in 2027. Following the success of One Piece, live-action manga and anime adaptations have become a main focus for the global streamer. Now, according to Netflix, it is dipping back into the growing genre with a new City Hunter movie. The live-action sequel is slated to debut in 2027, and it will bring Japanese A-lister Ryohei Suzuki back as lead.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has slated City Hunter 2 for a global launch next year. The movie will come several years after the release of City Hunter, the first live-action take Netflix took on the hit manga. The 2024 movie was a quick hit on Netflix as it debuted at #1 on the steamer’s Global Top 10 list for non-English films. The movie went on to join Netflix’s Top 10 in 32 countries, including Japan, France, South Korea, and more.
City Hunter 2 Will Expand Tsukasa Hojo’s Original Manga With a New Mission
As for what City Hunter 2 will bring to fans, Netflix is reportedly interested in expanding Suzuki’s leading role. The “cool yet goofy” fixer will embark on a new mission in Tokyo’s dark underbelly, but things will get complicated when a beautiful femme fatale enters the picture. This sexy thriller is par for the course with Ryo Saeba, the lead of Tsukasa Hojo’s hit manga. City Hunter made the sharpshooter famous following the manga’s debut in 1985, and Suzuki earned rave reviews for his take on the suave private eye in 2024.
“It’s thanks to everyone who loved and supported the previous film that we are able to bring you this new installment. I’m truly grateful,” Suzuki shared with fans in a new statement celebrating the order of City Hunter 2.
“Once again, we are entrusted with Tsukasa Hojo’s beloved original work, as well as the story cherished by fans around the world. With that responsibility in mind, I am approaching the filming with a strong sense of tension and determination. The previous film depicted the origin story between Ryo and Kaori. In this sequel, we’re delivering what you might call the most quintessential version of City Hunter yet.”
Hojo, the manga’s creator, also released a note to fans in light of Netflix’s exciting order. “I’m truly relieved and delighted to finally be able to officially share this news with everyone. I recently had the opportunity to visit the set, and I was deeply impressed by the incredible passion of Ryohei Suzuki and the director. In particular, Ryohei’s physical transformation was remarkable — it clearly reflected his dedication and commitment to every project he takes on. I have no doubt that this will be a fantastic piece of art filled with the passion of everyone involved.”
With City Hunter 2 eyeing production for its 2027 release, the movie illustrates how far Netflix Japan has come with its Japanese-language projects. A number of adaptations have been ordered by the division involving manga, including Yu Yu Hakusho, Mob Psycho 100, and Bleach. City Hunter marks an overdue nostalgia piece for Netflix’s growing Japanese division, and this sequel’s highly anticipated launch proves the steamer has further to go with this growing audience.
