Powers is a fusion of the superhero genre, crime noir, and police procedural drama. The series follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, as they handle cases involving individuals with superhuman abilities, commonly referred to as “powers.”
Powers is currently in development at Netflix. Dark Horse Entertainment’s Keith Goldberg and Chris Tongue are attached as executive producers. Bendis and his co-creator, Michael Avon Oeming, are also actively involved in the creative process for the series. Bendis will pen the pilot episode, and Oeming is contributing to the show’s visual design.
The first volume of the superhero series ran through Image Comics from 2000 to 2004 before shifting to Marvel Comics under its Icon imprint. In 2018, the series transitioned to DC Comics as part of the Jinxworld line. Powers was relocated once again in 2021 to Dark Horse Comics. The characters from the series have also made appearances in Image Comics’ Crossover, created by Donny Cates, Dee Cunniffe, John J. Hill, and Geoff Shaw. Crossover ran from November 4, 2020, to August 18, 2022, and is currently on hiatus.
Powers previously made its way to the screen as a live-action adaptation of the same name for the PlayStation Network. It ran for two seasons from March 10, 2015, to July 19, 2016, during the platform’s attempt to create original shows. The series starred Sharlto Copley as Christian and Susan Heyward as Deena.
Powers isn’t the only TV show in development at Netflix that was inspired by Bendis’ work. The streaming platform is also working on a series with the creator based on his 1998 graphic novel, Torso. The adaptation will also be produced by Zach Cregger, who directed and wrote the Academy Award-winning horror film, Weapons.
Aside from popular independent comics, Bendis is also very well-known in the mainstream comic book industry. The author wrote arguably one of the best Spider-Man runs in Marvel history, Ultimate Spider-Man. The series ran between September 2000 and June 2011, featuring art by Mark Bagley, Stuart Immonen, and David Lafuente.
The comic series became a huge hit, selling over 20 million copies worldwide and received critical acclaim, with many praising the art and the Powers creator’s storytelling skills. Bendis and Bagley’s tenure on Ultimate Spider-Man became the longest run by the same writer-artist duo on a Marvel Comics title, surpassing the previous record set by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby on Fantastic Four.
There is currently no official release date for Netflix’s adaptation of Powers at the time of this article’s publication.
