For most shows, being canceled would be the end of the series’ main character. For Jessica Jones, however, the character has a bit more staying power than that. While Jessica Jones hasn’t appeared in any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies, she’s actually set to rejoin the franchise in just a few days. Her return to the MCU is a result of both Jessica Jones‘ success and a concerted effort on the part of fans.
Jessica Jones Was One Of Marvel’s Greatest TV Shows
Back in 2015, Netflix created a series of more grounded and realistic shows based on Marvel superheroes, one of which was Jessica Jones. Jessica Jones quickly became one of Netflix’s best original shows of all time. There’s so much to love about Jessica Jones, from its more grounded take on the superhero genre to Krysten Ritter’s portrayal of the sarcastic main character, and it’s pretty clear to see why the show is one of Netflix’s best.
Like Daredevil, Jessica Jones trades the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s commonly massive and world-threatening problems for a show that centers around Jessica protecting her friends and New York neighborhood on a much more personal level. That works wonderfully for Jessica Jones, which essentially functions as both a character study of Jessica and a brilliantly-produced action series mixed with a psychological thriller.
Jessica Jones prided itself on telling personal stories that humanized superheroes and painted both Jessica and her allies and enemies in very human shades of grey. The entire series is complex in the best way possible, and each of Jessica Jones‘ three seasons is a winding thriller filled with twists and turns. If you haven’t seen it yet, even just the first episode of Jessica Jones will prove that it’s a show that is well worth watching.
Jessica Jones Still Has One Of The Best MCU Villains
It’s impossible to talk about how good Jessica Jones is without talking about David Tennant’s Kilgrave, the main antagonist of season 1. Kilgrave is arguably one of the best villains in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he was the perfect adversary for Jessica Jones. Kilgrave is a supervillain with the power of mind control, which isn’t interesting in and of itself, but the way he uses it is.
Kilgrave, instead of vying for world domination, uses his powers of mind control for two things: to carry out his own narcissistic agenda and to ruin Jessica’s life. He manipulates Jessica every chance he gets either through outright mind control or by killing anyone who comes remotely close to her orbit, and the entire time he’s destroying her life he’s convinced that he’s madly in love with her.
Marvel Comics offers the perfect way for the MCU to reintroduce David Tennant’s Kilgrave without undermining his perfect death in Jessica Jones.
David Tennant’s portrayal of Kilgrave is also supreme. He brings such a charming and carefree attitude to the character that’s almost infectious. You know you shouldn’t like Kilgrave, he’s a horrible person, but Tennant is just so magnetic that you can’t help but be enchanted by him. Tennant gave the perfect performance to portray Kilgrave as the manipulative and charismatic villain that he is, and the result is an utterly enthralling antagonist that propels the first season of the show.
It’s also remarkable how well Kilgrave has aged. Even after 11 years, no other MCU villain — not even Thanos — brings the same sinister and charismatic qualities to the table. Kilgrave is so compelling precisely because his story is so human. His fight with Jessica is so petty, so personal, and so deeply narcissistic that it feels more real than the world-ending plots MCU villains are known for. Jessica Jones stands alone as having the best villain in the MCU.
After Intense Fan Demand, Jessica Jones Is Returning In Daredevil: Born Again
Jessica Jones ended in 2019 thanks to some behind-the-scenes licensing disputes between Netflix and Marvel, which was a shame for many fans of the show. The prospect of not seeing Krysten Ritter play Jessica again was so disappointing for some fans that they actively demanded Marvel bring her back in the Daredevil revival, Daredevil: Born Again. Surprisingly enough, Marvel listened.
Daredevil: Born Again is set to premiere on March 24 on Disney+.
Marvel recently revealed that Jessica Jones will appear in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and that Ritter is reprising the role. While we don’t have any official details about what she’ll be doing in Born Again season 2, this is a major win for fans of Jessica Jones. It’s also safe to assume that Jessica will be helping Matt Murdock fight back against longtime antagonist Wilson Fisk, meaning fans will get to see much more of her in the MCU once again.
