Netflix’s 4-Part Crime Thriller Beats Out Matthew McConaughey’s The Lincoln Lawyer Movie With 1 Key Change

Netflix’s four-season crime thriller edges out Matthew McConaughey’s The Lincoln Lawyer movie thanks to one key change. The bestselling book series The Lincoln Lawyer has a massive fanbase. When Netflix brought it to life In 2022, the TV show starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo immediately became a fan-favorite.

However, the series wasn’t the first onscreen adaptation of Michael Connelly’s plucky main character. Previously, Matthew McConaughey played Mickey Haller in a 2011 adaptation. The movie was fairly successful at the box office and received mostly positive reviews from critics. As such, the two interpretations of The Lincoln Lawyer are often compared.

When it comes to which is the best, Matthew McConaughey’s The Lincoln Lawyer movie and Manuel-Garcia Rulfo’s The Lincoln Lawyer TV show are pretty neck-in-neck. Truly, both have so much to offer. As such, it comes down to the small details. One of the aspects of the Netflix show that pushes it over the edge is the inclusion of Hayley Haller, Mickey’s daughter.

Hayley Haller Barely Appears In Matthew McConaughey’s The Lincoln Lawyer Movie

The Lincoln Lawyer movie adapts the eponymous first novel of Michael Connelly’s book series, introducing audiences to the characters that matter in Mickey Haller’s world. One such character is a young Hayley Haller. The character does technically appear in the movie, with Mackenzie Aladjem playing her.

However, she gets almost no screen time, has almost no dialogue, and has almost no impact on the story. They truly could have taken her out of the movie, and it wouldn’t have impacted almost anything besides Maggie and Mickey’s need to stay in contact. That’s how minimal her role is.

In all fairness, Hayley is only a minor character in Michael Connelly’s 2005 book The Lincoln Lawyer. It isn’t the filmmaker’s fault that she barely appeared in the Matthew McConaughey movie. She isn’t a huge part of the first book in the series, but her role grows in future novels.

Theoretically, they could have expanded her role, but the movie is praised for its faithfulness to the book. That doesn’t change the fact that Hayley’s role in Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer is an asset to the story that the film doesn’t have.

Hayley Haller has a much bigger role in The Lincoln Lawyer TV show, and she actually influences the plot. She’s the reason Mickey hires Eddie in season 3. He won’t take money away from Hayley’s education, which means he stays in jail longer in season 4. Hayley getting bullied, which is a book change to The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, factors into his decision to prove himself innocent instead of getting not guilty.

Not everyone likes Hayley because she’s written as an emotional, confused teen girl. However, that’s why she’s so great. She isn’t always happy with Mickey, and she frequently makes irrational decisions. However, at no point does he write her off or stop trying to be there for her.

Even when things are strained, Mickey continues to care and try to show up for his daughter. The relationship makes Mickey Haller a more grounded character and shows how much he values his family.

Mickey has to walk a moral line because of his job as a defense attorney. He plays an important role in the justice system, but sometimes that means working for criminals. Hayley has difficulty understanding this part of his job, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind.

Hayley actively challenges him to define the line between right and wrong, questioning his non-negotiable boundaries. She doesn’t just accept his answers. Because she’s his daughter, he listens to what she thinks and reflects on his ideas about justice.

At the same time, she’s open to changing her mind, as seen when she realizes Mickey got an innocent man out of prison. She comes to see the value of his job, though she still questions part of it. By playing the role of his moral compass, Hayley helps Mickey grow in Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer.
