This gritty Nordic crime thriller marks the first major TV adaptation of the aforementioned book series written by Jo Nesbø, who also served as the series creator and showrunner. Rather than starting with the first book in the series, as Prime Video’s Reacher franchise did with its debut season, this Netflix thriller adapted the fifth book out of 13, set in Oslo during a heatwave.
Netflix’s 9-Part Crime Thriller Based On Popular Books Just Arrived
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole has finally arrived on Netflix and is the best new crime thriller to binge on the platform this weekend. For those who are unfamiliar with the book series, which first came out in 1997 with The Bat, the story follows a brilliant yet troubled detective with addiction problems who has a knack for catching serial killers. Tobias Santelmann portrays the iconic protagonist Harry Hole, while Joel Kinnaman plays his charming but corrupt colleague, Tom Waaler.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole season 1 adapts the fifth book in the series, The Devil’s Star, which centers on a serial killer targeting women in Oslo who leaves a disturbing signature. Similar to classic serial killer thrillers like True Detective and Dexter, Detective Hole dives into an obsessive investigation to identify the killer and bring whoever it is to justice. Harry Hole is the best detective equipped to solve the case, but his alcoholism and his fierce rivalry with Tom get in the way of an honest pursuit.
Michael Fassbender’s 2017 film The Snowman was first adapted from the Harry Hole novel of the same name, but received very poor reviews. Although the film was based on Jo Nesbø’s 2007 novel, he was not a part of the film’s production. Now, with Netflix’s 9-part thriller series, he has taken creative control of his beloved franchise back in his own hands to deliver an intense and gripping experience for Netflix’s vast audience.
Binge All 9 Episodes Of Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole This Weekend
Along with the new psychological horror thriller Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, which was produced by the Duffer Brothers of Stranger Things acclaim, Detective Hole is one of the best new shows to binge on Netflix this weekend and should make a big splash on Netflix’s global viewership charts. If you enjoyed hard-boiled detective shows like Bosch or Luther, then this show is perfect for you, as Harry Hole was partially inspired by Harry Bosch.
The series is also a great example of a modern Nordic noir, joining the likes of acclaimed series like The Bridge and The Killing, and has already set a foundation for what could become a new massive crime thriller franchise for Netflix. With so much source material left to adapt, Detective Hole could very well be Netflix’s answer to Prime Video’s hit streaming franchises based on books, like Reacher and Bosch. That said, the series is quite dark, moody, and violent, so if you find yourself squeamish, you may want to pass.
Detective Hole’s perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score is already a very promising sign for its future and weekend streaming success. Collider gave the series 8/10 stars, calling it, “a roundhouse-kick of a thrill ride that lives up to the promises baked into the thriller subgenre’s name.” In the same vein, Screen Rant notes it “seems to earn its place among the better crime thriller adaptations on streaming right now.” Don’t miss one of the biggest new streaming releases on Netflix this weekend.
