On the TV show side, there are series like The Night Agent, The Lincoln Lawyer, You, and many more. When it comes to Netflix Original movies, some notable thrillers include The Rip, Bird Box, Carry-On, and more. Joining their ranks is a movie that connects in a way to some of Netflix’s biggest TV shows of all time. The reason is simple.
One Of Netflix’s Best Thrillers Is Based On A True Story
Like popular Netflix series, such as the Monster anthology or Inventing Anna, Woman of the Hour is based on a true story. The crime thriller movie was released on Netflix on October 18, 2024. Directed by and starring Anna Kendrick, the film focuses on Rodney Alcala, a contestant on The Dating Game in 1978 who was later revealed to be a violent serial killer targeting women.
Alcala is played by Daniel Zovatto (Station Eleven). Aside from directing the dark movie, Kendrick gives life to Sheryl Bradshaw, an actress who becomes a contestant in an episode of The Dating Game. Rodney ends up being one of the three bachelors on the show, and given how the viewer knows about his crimes at this point, the game show quickly gains a nefarious layer.
Over the last few years, audiences have shown that they will show up for movies and TV shows connected to real crimes. Well, this Netflix thriller is not only based on a true story, but it is one of the streamer’s best films. On Rotten Tomatoes, Woman of the Hour has a near-perfect 91% critics’ score, giving it the Certified Fresh label.
Why Woman Of The Hour Is Worth Watching On Netflix
If you have not yet watched Woman of the Hour, then it is high time you did so, be it during the week or over a quiet night this weekend. The Netflix thriller does a phenomenal job of setting up its suspense by showing Rodney killing some of his victims before The Dating Game starts.
This lets the audience in on his dark secret, while the rest of the world is unaware of what is going on as Rodney becomes a popular candidate on the game show. As always, Kendrick is pitch-perfect as Sheryl, playing the character in more easygoing moments and darker conversations with the necessary nuance. As Rodney, Zovatto plays both charming and chilling well.
At the end of the day, Woman of the Hour is a Netflix thriller made for true-crime fans that knows exactly how to best tell the story it chose to cover. New viewers should get hooked by this suspense-filled tale right from the start. It is also worth watching due to being Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, which makes Woman of the Hour even more interesting.
