Netflix’s Scooby-Doo Series Officially Casts Live-Action Fred, Velma & Shaggy

The new Scooby-Doo live-action series on Netflix is expanding its cast for the upcoming reboot.

Netflix has completed the gang for the Scooby-Doo cast. The streaming service has confirmed that Maxwell Jenkins has been cast as Fred Jones for the new live-action reimagination, while Abby Ryder Fortson is set as Velma Dinkley, with Tanner Hagen having been tapped as Shaggy Rogers.

McKenna Grace was cast as Daphne on February 17, 2026, with the Netflix adaptation coming from Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who have been set as the showrunners. Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti is also attached to executive produce, with Toby Haynes set to helm the pilot.

Fred was famously portrayed by Freddie Prinze Jr. in the Scooby-Doo movies from 2002 and 2004, which also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley, and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers. There is no known date yet for when production will start.

Based on the iconic Hanna-Barbera franchise, Netflix’s Scooby-Doo, which will consist of eight episodes, will be a modern origin story about how Mystery Inc. came to be. The first season was formally greenlit in March 2025.

According to Netflix, the Scooby-Doo reboot will be centered “during their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder.”

They joined forces with “the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma,” along with Jenkins’ Freddy, who is described as “the strange, but ever-so-handsome new kid.” Together, the iconic gang “set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

A release window for Scooby-Doo has yet to be set by Netflix.
