Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a unique approach to a unique premise, using body horror and other unsettling tropes to explore concepts of commitment, existential dread, and more. It’s worked out pretty well for Netflix, too, as the series has earned an impressive 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes and is currently trending at #1 on the platform’s Top 10 TV shows list. It’s sort of unfortunate that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is billed as a limited series, since this sort of success would typically make a future promising. Of course, never say never.
Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen Is Perfectly Set Up To Replace American Horror Story
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen had a perfectly satisfactory ending (at least as far as horror shows go), and since it is a limited series, there are no established plans for a second season. However, given the way this Netflix series is set up, it could be truly excellent as an anthology. It could work something like American Horror Story, which featured a brand-new frightening story in every season, with much of the same cast in different roles.
American Horror Story is approaching its 13th and final season, and though anthologies are nothing new, this horror series took a unique approach. Its absence will leave quite a void in the horror genre, but Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen could sweep right in and fill it. After all, we know that the curse featured in this series can spread, and those doomed weddings are essentially infinitely repeated. Each season could follow a new set of lovers, perhaps jumping forward to nuptials further down the Cunningham line or backward to past weddings in Rachel’s family.
American Horror Story season 3 premieres on October 31, 2026.
If Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen wanted to be even more like American Horror Story, its anthology format would lead it into an entirely new direction with season 2. While the debut story revolved around “something bad” happening at Rachel’s wedding, future installments could explore other “bad” things at other big events. Anything that people would typically feel anxious about approaching—a big move, starting a new job, having a baby, graduating high school—could be attached to a horrifying curse and explored in unsettling ways in future seasons of this new show.
Could Netflix’s Limited Series Still Get Renewed For Season 2?
Once upon a time, the fact that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is a limited series might have meant something. These days, however, Netflix tends to play fast and loose with the general idea. There have been several miniseries that were renewed for a second seasons after the firsts performed well. It’s not even unheard of for such shows to be transformed into anthologies, as this is precisely what has happened with Netflix’s Beef (season 2 arriving April 16, 2026). So, there is plenty of precedent to give us hope that Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen could be extended.
The Netflix show’s creator, Haley Z. Boston, has acknowledged as much, stating that she could see future seasons exploring “a totally different, very bad thing.” Boston went on to say that she would have to find “another existential fear to explore,” suggesting that no such concept has been worked out or presented to Netflix yet. Still, with American Horror Story headed off the market, Netflix might be eager to get its name tossed in to replace the horror anthology. The time might be just right for Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.
