Reacher‘s audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes have seen a steady decrease with each season. However, this hasn’t been enough to significantly knock down its overall reception. The review aggregator site reflects an overall critic score of 96% and an audience score of 80%—both indicators of a great series. The Night Agent, on the other hand, has an overall critic score of 82% and an audience score of 65%. It’s clear that general viewers have been a bit less impressed with Netflix’s crime thriller.
Of course, before The Night Agent season 3, this TV show’s audience score was significantly lower. This most recent batch of episodes put Netflix back in the game against Prime Video’s Reacher, and such a comeback is no easy thing. Still, after the disappointment of The Night Agent season 2, the show can’t afford to fall short again.
The Night Agent Season 3 Was Great, But Season 2 Was A Disappointment
A big contributor to The Night Agent‘s lower overall audience score is season 2. This installment really lost its footing, and only 39% of viewers gave it positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The unfortunate drop followed a 78% score for The Night Agent season 1, indicating that the show itself wasn’t the problem—something about season 2 didn’t work.
These sorts of sophomore slumps aren’t uncommon among TV shows, especially those from Netflix. After The Night Agent grabbed viewers’ attention with season 1, it had to prove with season 2 that it could hold it. Critics gave the show fair praise, but the general audience, as reflected in their reviews, found The Night Agent season 2’s new characters uninteresting, rendering the overarching mystery rather tiresome. Then there were recurring Night Agent characters like Peter and Rose, both of whom went through frustrating and annoying moral arcs.

After all that, it’s pretty miraculous that The Night Agent managed to recover with season 3. A 79% is nothing to sneeze at, and the fact that this is the show’s highest audience scores yet is really quite astounding. Netflix’s crime thriller is set back on course, but that doesn’t mean it’s not in a rather precarious position.
Season 4 Of The Night Agent Can’t Afford To Fall Short
If The Night Agent had three consistently well-received seasons under its belt, Netflix could afford to breathe a little ahead of season 4. It’s precisely for this reason that Reacher‘s overall outlook is so phenomenal despite the steadily declining audience score. The Prime Video crime thriller is still generally consistent, so even a complete flop of a season wouldn’t be enough to doom the project in the eyes of viewers. This isn’t currently The Night Agent‘s position.
At the moment, we can call The Night Agent season 2 a fluke. However, if The Night Agent season 4 falls short, the issue will then become a pattern. It will appear as if this TV show got lucky with a couple of good installments, but it doesn’t have what it takes to go the distance. Inconsistency like this would be especially damning in the face of Reacher‘s success.
The Night Agent’s Inconsistent Performance Makes It Hard To Compete With Reacher
The Night Agent has always looked like Netflix’s chance to keep up with Prime Video’s Reacher. These are both action thrillers based on novels and have essentially unlimited plot possibilities. However, the former has, obviously, struggled to find its legs. It wasn’t until season 3 that the show seemed to really understand what had made Reacher so successful. The Night Agent is now fully committed to Reacher‘s anthology format, making Peter the only consistent returning character and centralizing his independent development.
The Night Agent season 3 has a just barely higher audience score than Reacher season 3. However, because it hasn’t consistently held that level of approval, it’s hard to grant Netflix a solid win here. Thanks to its rocky start, The Night Agent will now have to maintain superb quality for several more installments before it can ever truly stand victorious over Reacher. It’s a hard ask, but not quite impossible.
The Night Agent’s Miraculous Season 3 Comeback Is A Great Sign (Especially Against Reacher)
Though The Night Agent hasn’t yet dominated Reacher, its season 3 achievement shouldn’t be overlooked. Maintaining consistent quality is hard, but coming back from a bad season is even harder. Additionally, the way that The Night Agent came back from the edge is significant. This show not only adopted Reacher‘s anthology format but also improved on it.
The Night Agent‘s Peter Sutherland is a developing character, while Jack Reacher is an immutable hero who remains uncorruptible from season to season. So, while both The Night Agent and Reacher feature new supporting characters and central controversies in each installment, only Netflix’s action thriller centralizes a fluid, relatable protagonist.
Reacher‘s declining viewer reception may be a symptom of that character monotony. Meanwhile, The Night Agent has all the potential in the world to get better and better with every installment. While another slip-up could absolutely break the Netflix series, it could be thoroughly made with another hit, especially if Reacher season 4 keeps that trend going downward.
