As expected, Superman and Batman’s costumes have evolved with the times, often adopting additional features like collars, chin straps, and panels, or losing their trunks, belts, and boots. Still, the general concept has survived over eight decades of history and countless different interpretations by dozens of artists.
Not every costume reinvention attempts to stay for good. Some variations simply add a bold twist to Superman and Batman’s appearance for a limited time.
Batman & Superman’s New Costumes Will Evolve
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #52; Written by Mark Waid, Art by Adrián Gutierrez; Cover by Dan Mora; Variant covers by Davide Paratore and Adrián Gutierrez
Following their encounter with the Crime Syndicate, Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are set to travel to a faraway, prehistoric land in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #51. Superman and Batman will get stranded in Skartaris, where a red sun weakens the Man of Steel’s Kryptonian powers and the Dark Knight finds himself without his wealth and most of his resources. Naturally, Batman and Superman’s costumes will evolve as they repair their increasingly tattered clothes.
The World’s Finest won’t stop at creating bandages, gauntlets, boots, and crests. Dan Mora’s official cover for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #52 reveals that Superman will wear a full-body suit of armor made entirely of bones, with a full dinosaur skull embedded into one of the suit’s shoulder pads. Meanwhile, Batman sports a full beard, plus fangs decorating his new fur cape and his yellow-and-red chest emblem.
Superman Officially Claims New Codename & Costume in Historical Lore Upheaval
Superman officially claims a new codename and costume, marking a historic upheaval that reshapes the hero’s legacy and future forever.
The cover for issue #51 features Superman wielding an axe and Batman wielding a bow. Mora’s cover for Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #52 doesn’t reveal any new weapons, but the titular heroes are also likely to find and craft more makeshift tools as they venture deeper into the wild lands of Skartaris. Given that the World’s Finest already look like prehistoric warriors in their second issue at Skartaris, their new costumes will likely evolve even more in the following one or two issues.
Batman & Superman’s Prehistoric Armor Joins A Long List Of Epic Costume Changes
The World’s Finest Have A Huge Wardrobe In DC Comics Lore
Batman and Superman have an extensive history of temporary costume changes. Beyond their standard primary-colored attire, the World’s Finest have frequently pivoted to specialized looks that, while not permanent, have left a lasting mark on the fandom. Superman’s most polarizing yet unforgettable change may have been the 1990s blue-and-white containment suit. Similarly, Batman steps away from his dark aesthetic with his Rainbow Batman phase in Detective Comics #241, where he wears a different colored suit every night.
In 2004’s Superman: Godfall, a version of Kal El who grows up in Krypton wears a futuristic, armored Kryptonian tunic, while Superman Beyond features a tight-fitting black-and-white bodysuit, and New Krypton gives him a more militaristic uniform that vaguely resembles Zod’s traditional look. Batman’s alternate-universe closet is equally varied, ranging from the makeshift, patchwork rags of the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh to Red Rain‘s vampire-inspired gothic armor. Like their Skartarian outfits, these designs serve as visual shorthand for the specific psychological or environmental pressures facing the World’s Finest in every conflict, across every universe.
Designing new looks for Batman and Superman is perhaps the most daunting challenge for any DC artist, as the World’s Finest are the foundational faces of the DC Universe. Batman and Superman are so iconic that any change, no matter how temporary, must strike a delicate balance between innovation and tradition. A costume that’s too far removed from Superman’s strongman roots or Batman’s detective origins risks alienating the audience, but playing it too safe could lead to stagnation.
