Premiering on March 6, Outlander season 8 will mark the hit historical fantasy show’s final outing. However, Starz officially began its first expansion beyond the flagship series with Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a prequel show that premiered in August 2025. With Blood of My Blood season 2 already confirmed to be on the way, it’s looking like it will soon be joined by more Outlander offshoots.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender for Outlander season 8, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts addressed the potential for additional stories within the Outlander TV universe. While Roberts didn’t clarify which Outlander timeline, characters, or broader connections would serve as the basis, the showrunner did confirm that the team has “definitely been talking about more spinoffs,” while teasing that there “might be some news” coming for fans to look out for:
ScreenRant: “Matt, the success of Blood of My Blood shows there is still an appetite for more stories in this universe. Have there been conversations about exploring other spinoffs, or are we thinking about what’s happening with Jamie’s parents and Claire’s parents right now?”
Matthew B. Roberts: “No, we’ve definitely been talking about more spinoffs, and trying to figure out where to go next. I won’t break the news now, but there might be some news in the future.”
While Blood of My Blood focuses on the backstory of Jamie’s parents and Claire’s parents, Roberts’ response suggests that there have been conversations about expanding the franchise’s focus beyond these more immediately-connected characters. Not only are other spinoff talks happening behind the scenes, but Roberts implies that Starz may already be at the point of preparing to announce these plans.
The notion that Outlander may expand with more spinoffs comes as little surprise, given the outstanding success of Blood of My Blood over summer 2025. Blood of My Blood received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, with the first Outlander spinoff currently holding a “Certified Fresh” 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Throughout its season 1 run, Blood of My Blood also managed to remain at the top of Starz’s streaming charts.
The main show, which launched on Starz in 2014, is adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander book series. Nine books have already been published, with the tenth and final installment in the original novel series currently on the way. However, the source material has become far more expansive than what the original Starz series covers, providing plenty of other stories for potential spinoff adaptations to tackle.
In addition to the core Outlander novels, the franchise includes several novellas on characters other than Jamie and Claire, a graphic novel, and a spinoff book series centered on the character Lord John Grey. In the past, there were talks of a potential Lord John Grey series, with actor David Berry revealing that during Outlander season 4, a spinoff script was written and he signed a contract for the show. While plans for the series were later quietly scrapped, Berry has still expressed interest in getting a Lord John spinoff on the air.
Though more spinoffs appear to be on the horizon, it’s unclear whether they could still include the canceled Lord John offshoot. That said, the main focus for the TV franchise right now is the release of Outlander season 8. After the season 8 premiere on March 6 and the series finale release on May 8, attention may then turn to the next direction for Outlander‘s teased expansions alongside Blood of My Blood.
