Over on the official PlayStation Blog, the company has explained the PS5 price increases are due to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” That is understandable — everything is more expensive these days. Still, that doesn’t mean we have to be happy about it, and considering the baseline PS5 started out at an already pricey $500, it’s a major blow to the folks who were saving up for one since it’ll now cost around $650.
No One’s Happy About New PS5 Price Increases
You can read more about the PS5 price increases here. In the U.S., the price increases look like this:
- PS5 – $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
- PS5 Pro – $899.99
Yes, you read that right. It’s now $900 for a PS5 Pro. The announcement over on X, which you can see above, was met with heavy criticism.
“This is an insane price increase. Doubt you will make your goals now at these prices,” wrote Dust. “Holy s**t, not good,” commented Pyo. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
“Don’t blame what’s happening around the world. This is just greedy bs and you know it!” wrote one user. “No thanks,” read several comments by people who apparently are no longer enticed by a PS5.
If you’re looking for positive responses, you won’t find them. While some folks shared memes for levity’s sake, everyone else simply vented their outrage.
More Expensive Consoles Are A Harsh New Reality
Sadly, more expensive consoles are becoming a harsh new reality. PS5 has made it official, but reports suggest the Switch 2 will cost more soon, and this on top of video games (many of which now sale for an increased $69.99 at launch) rumored to be increasing in prices as well.
Groceries. Gas. Pretty much everything costs more now. It’s not necessarily surprising consoles like the PlayStation 5 and video games will cost more too, but it still sucks. It’s a shame too, because so many people use video games to relax from daily stresses. Now, even relaxation and fun apparently come at a premium.
