Nicole Kidman Continues Career Trend In Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta On Prime Video

March 2026 will see the long-awaited arrival of Scarpetta to Prime Video. This crime procedural series follows the case work of titular medical protagonist Kay Scarpetta, who’s played by Nicole Kidman. The role marks the continuation of an exciting trend in Kidman’s acting career, following a succession of other TV performances in best-selling book adaptations themed around murder mysteries.

Much like a classic detective thriller, Scarpetta deals primarily in homicide investigations, although from the unusual perspective of a highly sought-after medical examiner. Adapted from the hugely popular novel series of the same name by author Patricia Cornwell, it has the potential to be Nicole Kidman’s best TV show since the first season of Little Big Lies in 2017.

As well as the latest season of Prime Video’s action crime juggernaut Reacher, several outstanding TV shows based on books debuted in 2025, including the female-led detective show Ballard. It looks as though Scarpetta could well set the standard for book adaptations in the crime genre for 2026, with Nicole Kidman the ideal star to take on its title role.

Nicole Kidman Stars In Prime Video’s Crime Thriller Scarpetta

Flanked by a stellar supporting ensemble including Bobby Cannavale and Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman is perfectly cast as Kay Scarpetta, a brilliant and beautiful forensic pathologist with a murky past. Her protagonist is sought out for homicide cases which are particularly difficult to solve, including the body found on a train track in the show’s opening mystery.

If Scarpetta’s trailer is anything to go by, this crime procedural is going to be as thrilling as it is clinical, with its title character’s personal backstory far more relevant to the criminal case at hand than she’d like it to be. This show has all the ingredients to be Kidman’s biggest and best dramatic role in years.

Scarpetta Is Adapted From Patricia Cornwell’s Book Series Of The Same Name

Much like Prime Video’s action megahit Reacher, Scarpetta has the potential to run forever, given the vast expanse of the literary universe on which it’s based. Patricia Cornwell’s novel series of the same name adds up to 29 books and counting.

The TV show’s first season is partly based on Postmortem, the very first book of Cornwell’s series. Overall, though, it tells a brand-new story, synthesizing elements from several of the novels at once.

It seems there’s no limit to the number of Kay Scarpetta stories that can be told, especially when Cornwell makes extensive use of flashbacks to the character’s earlier life – an approach carried over to the TV series. Even if the show itself doesn’t carry on indefinitely, it could expand into various spinoffs, much like Prime Video’s Bosch TV universe.

As long as Kidman delivers the kind of performance we expect her to, there’s even the possibility that Scarpetta could challenge the Bosch franchise’s supremacy as the undisputed summit of crime procedural series on Amazon’s streaming platform. Either way, the show will certainly bolster Prime Video’s hopes of overtaking Netflix as streaming’s most-watched platform.

Nicole Kidman Has Also Recently Starred In Adaptations Of Liane Moriarty’s Crime Novels

What makes Nicole Kidman so well suited to the role of Kay Scarpetta isn’t just her star power or charismatic screen presence. She’s currently undertaking a career-defining run of murder-mystery crime shows adapted from successful novels.

The best-known and most successful of these shows are adaptations of Liane Moriarty’s crime books Little Big Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers. But we can add to these two series adaptations of Jean Hanff Korelitz’s You Should Have Known for HBO’s The Undoing, and Elin Hilderbrand’s The Perfect Couple on Netflix.

Kidman has found a new mid-career specialism – one which we couldn’t have seen coming 10 years ago. Scarpetta might do more than just continue this exciting trend. It could turn Nicole Kidman into one of television’s most beloved and recognizable detectives.
