Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Teases The SNES Remake Of Our Dreams

Nintendo Switch 2 rumors have been flying for the last week or so, but one apparent leak flew under the radar: a remake of SNES classic Super Metroid. Reputable leaks have recently teased Nintendo’s upcoming first-party slate, including an Ocarina of Time remake, the return of Star Fox, and the sad news that Mario’s next 3D platformer likely won’t arrive until next year. As if that weren’t enough, Metroid rumors are now surfacing.

Most of the recent leaks have come from Nate the Hate, who is especially reliable when it comes to Nintendo, but a number of comments and videos from various places have been found which were made before Nate’s video, contain some of the same leaks, plus more. They’ve been compiled into a Reddit thread by user Laughing_Luigi, and the standout new addition to the rumored slate is a pixel-art remake of Super Metroid said to be “close” to release.

The rumor comes from YouTube user Malo932, who, eight days ago (five days before Nate the Hate’s video) doubled down with a second comment on a separate video. In addition to the Super Metroid remake, they claim Nintendo is working on a second Star Fox game, a new Nintendo Switch Sports title, and a Wario Land game for 2027. The issue here is, of course, reliability, but the timing of their claims is intriguing.

Is Super Metroid Finally Getting A Remake?

There’s no way to verify Malo932’s claims, but a remake of Super Metroid arriving at some point wouldn’t be unexpected. The Metroid series has already received remakes of its classic games in the past, albeit at a very slow pace, just like the series’ release cadence overall. The original Metroid was remade for the Game Boy Advance in 2004 as Metroid: Zero Mission, and Metroid 2: Return of Samus was remade for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017 with the title Metroid: Samus Returns.

Super Metroid has long been suspected of being next, both because it’s the third game in the series and because of its beloved status. It’s often held as the best Metroid game, even 32 years after its initial release in 1994, and has special historical status as the specific Metroid game to contribute the series’ half to the metroidvania genre name (alongside Castelvania: Symphony of the Night). A remake feels long overdue, though the rumor that it will once again have pixelated art might not satisfy some who were hoping for a greater visual overhaul.

Nintendo Switch 2 Gamers Could Be Getting Much More Metroid

Samus in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

In the above Reddit thread, yet more rumors were added to the list after it was originally posted. Among them is the assertion that MercurySteam – development studio for Samus Returns and Metroid Dread – is currently working on Metroid 6, though it won’t be released this year. Much like the Super Metroid remake rumor, this can’t be confirmed (and should be taken with some skepticism given the unverified sources), but isn’t exactly a revelation.

If Super Metroid isn’t the best game in the series, Dread is the other most common contender for the title. Nintendo has shown no indication of putting Metroid on ice now that it has had something of a reemergence in the Switch family of consoles, so a sixth mainline game is expected at some point. Before Metroid 6, though, it would appear a Super Metroid remake is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, and a summer Direct is the suspected place we might learn more.
