Based on the manga by Atsushi Ohkubo, creator of Soul Eater, what started as the Special Fire Force Company 8’s endeavors in defeating Infernals reached astronomical proportions, revealing that both the mystery of the world and Shinra Kusakabe’s role as a hero were deeper than viewers anticipated. Fire Force‘s anime came to an end after almost six years and 73 episodes on April 3, 2026, but the most shocking thing wasn’t Shinra’s fate but the series’ connection with another beloved anime.
Although fans hadn’t given much thought to the Soul Eater references in Fire Force, since homages are common among works by the same manga author, the anime’s ending confirmed that both series belong to the same universe. Furthermore, the events of Fire Force are merely a prelude to Soul Eater. This not only reignited the hype around Soul Eater but also made a remake of Maka Albarn and Soul Evans’ story more likely than ever.
Fire Force’s Story Is a Prequel to Soul Eater
In addition to the characteristic sun and moon that gave fans a clue, in episode 24 of Fire Force Season 3, it was revealed that Arthur Boyle’s sword was actually the same Excalibur from Soul Eater‘s universe. Both Excalibur, who was mentioned as being over 800 years old, and Blair from Soul Eater, can be seen in the New World created by Shinra Kusakabe at the end of Fire Force.
After a 25-year time skip showing Shinra as Commander of the World Heroes Force and a glimpse of his descendants, it’s confirmed that Soul Eater is set chronologically far in the future from the events of Fire Force. In the final sequences, Death is seen creating Death the Kid, modeling him after Shinra, the hero who created the New World.
Other Soul Eater main characters, such as Maka Albarn, Soul Evans, and Black Star, also make brief cameos, appearing as children. Furthermore, Fire Force‘s anime ends with a scene showing Maka’s parents reading Shinra’s story to her as if it were a classic children’s fairy tale.
How Fire Force’s Ending Might Be Setting Up a Soul Eater Remake
It’s undeniable that David Production wanted to emphasize the connection between Fire Force and Soul Eater, a vital clue towards a potential remake of the series. The third ending theme from Soul Eater was used as an insert song in Fire Force‘s final sequence, and the series was hinted at in the end title card message: “Next is Soul World.”
This is also the final panel in Fire Force chapter #304, with “Soul World” being an indirect reference to Soul Eater due to copyright issues, as the manga was published in a different magazine. However, Fire Force‘s anime went further than the manga by including the Soul Eater logo. While there has been no official announcement yet regarding a possible Soul Eater remake, the series creator, Atsushi Ohkubo, expressed his openness to new projects in a message posted on his X account following the end of Fire Force:
“If there’s another Fire Force project or something else comes up, I’ll show up for some promo like always, hehe!
Looking forward to it then! Bye-bye!!” – Atsushi Ohkubo.
The Possibility of a Soul Eater Remake
Given that fans have been clamoring for a Soul Eater anime reboot that adapts all the manga and fixes the controversial original ending of the first adaptation, now might be the perfect time to announce it, riding the wave of hype following Fire Force. Although Bones, not David Production, was in charge of the Soul Eater anime, the studio is no stranger to remakes.
Although Bones produced the successful Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, it is always possible for a studio to negotiate the rights to an IP, especially since 17 years have passed since the end of Soul Eater.
Soul Eater could also follow the example of Blue Exorcist and have a new season that continues the story and omits the additional content from the original anime adaptation. Ultimately, it’s just a matter of time before viewers know if the popularity of Fire Force will be enough to ignite the spark for a new Soul Eater adaptation.
