To celebrate two years of the RPG sequel, the Dragon’s Dogma Twitter account shared brand-new artwork, which appears to be staged in-engine. It appears innocuous at first, but fans have been quick to pick up on a couple of important details. First is the suspiciously framed letter on the table, written in the fake language of Gransys, the setting of the first Dragon’s Dogma. Second is a character in the back of the scene turned away from the camera; they don’t appear to be a character present in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 May Finally Get DLC
A Reddit thread from user PaiDuck has collected a summary of these clues, and offers an English translation of the Gransys language. Dragon’s Dogma uses a simple substitution cipher to create Gransys’ language from English, and when converted back, the letter on the table in the DD2 artwork reads, “Sightings of griffins flying in from the northern region of Organ have been confirmed.” Item descriptions and loading screens in Dragon’s Dogma 2 also mention a northern region, though it’s never visited or elucidated on in-game.
Combined with the apparently new character with their back turned, this artwork for Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s second anniversary is suspected of being a teaser for an expansion featuring said northern region. Considering it’s been two whole years since DD2 debuted to fairly strong reviews with practically no updates from Capcom, an expansion announcement would be quite the surprise. Dragon’s Dogma 2 saw respectable sales (3.7 million units in a year), but seemed to fade quickly, and there was no indication that DLC was on the way.
Could Dragon’s Dogma 2 Get A New Version Like Dark Arisen?
In the immediate aftermath of this apparent tease, Dragon’s Dogma 2 fans are once again hoping that new content will bring transformative changes to the base game. Performance issues were mitigated to a degree post-launch, but a persistent complaint has been a severe lack of enemy variety. It’s a situation not dissimilar to the first Dragon’s Dogma, which is more fondly remembered for the enhanced version, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, that came out a year after its initial launch.
An equivalent to Dark Arisen for Dragon’s Dogma 2 could help turn the game’s reputation around, but with the second anniversary celebration mentioning a new region, we may be in for a more traditional expansion, rather than an enhanced version. More content may help DD2 regardless – if this presumed teaser actually leads to anything. Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s potential is plain to see, but fell short just like its predecessor. A new expansion could be exactly what it needs.
