Maruti’s WagonR, which was number one selling car till last year, slipped down to number seven in FY26 with sales of around 1.80 lakh, mainly due to lack in the demand of compact cars in the country, data sourced from industry sources said.
In FY25, WagonR sales were recorded at more than 1.98 lakh units. However, in the top 10 list of India’s highest selling PVs, MSIL still rules the market with six vehicles – Dzire (No.1), Ertiga (No.4) with sales of around 1.99 lakh units, Swift (No.5) with around 1.85 lakh units, WagonR (No.7), Brezza (No.8) with around 1.80 lakh units and Baleno (No.10) with more than 1.72 lakh units.

The Dzire is the only sedan that MSIL sells out of its portfolio of around 20 vehicles across segments, after the company stopped production of Ciaz last year. Powered by a 1.2-litre Petrol engine, the Dzire is priced between ₹6.25 lakh and ₹9.31 lakh (ex-showroom), with six aribags as standard. It is also available in Maruti’s S-CNG technology and also available in Tour S category for taxi segment.
“We have not exited the sedan segment. We have introduced the full model change of Dzire in the financial year 2024-25. Dzire has been the No.1 model in the country in the calendar year 2025 and financial year 2025-26 with a volume of 2,29,130 units. It is very big achievement as in a market where the SUVs are ruling the most, a sedan emerges as the number one selling model. This shows there are customers who are looking for the sedan segment also,” Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, MSIL, told reporters in a recent call on sales performance.
He said there are still customers for all the form factors and all type of vehicles.

Talking about demand in small cars segment, Banerjee said post GST reduction, there was a huge demand for the small cars, but there is a pressure now because of the commodity prices going up due the West Asia war.
Having said, he also added that since small car buyers are very price sensitive, MSIL has been absorbing the prices since January, but now as the commodity prices are still on the rise, it will take a call on price hikes soon for its products.
“Unfortunately, the commodity prices are going very high, so we need to pass them on to the customers,” Banerjee said.
