Outlander Season 8 Officially Brings Back Divisive Jamie & Claire Story After Big “Betrayal”

Outlander’s 8th and final season is on the horizon, and ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender got an opportunity to sit down with Caitriona Balfe about what to expect after that big betrayal.

The eight-season historical romance follows the story of Claire Beauchamp (played by Balfe) after the Second World War enjoying her honeymoon in Scotland. However, an unexpected twist of fate finds her transported back to 1743 and leads her on an adventure full of love, loss, and the internal battle between the past and future. Outlander is based on the novel series written by Diana Gabaldon released in 1991.

Outlander season 7 included the jaw-dropping twist of Claire bedding Lord John Grey, Jamie’s best friend and foster father, to his son. Jamie (played by Sam Heughan), presumed dead, returned to find those closest to him had presumably moved on without him. Audiences felt similarly betrayed, though the plot quickly moved on to the American Revolutionary War.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender, Balfe addresses the dynamic between Jamie and Claire following the shocking events of season 7. Balfe was asked about the night Claire spent with Lord John Grey and how that still has left a stain on her relationship with Jamie.

I think Claire is like, ‘Come on!’ Right? Yeah, get over it. But I’m not against Jamie.

I don’t think the fact that he needs a little bit more time and is maybe still a little sore about it all is wrong necessarily. But, the dynamic between the two is quite funny, because Claire is rolling her eyes at him and is just like, ‘Oh, you’re not over this by now?’ But I get it.

Although it was unintentional on Claire and Lord John’s parts, I think it’s a big betrayal for Jamie. So, he’s going to need a minute, much to Claire’s annoyance. But he does! He’s going to need a minute.

While Jamie stews on his sense of betrayal, it was very clear in season 7, that any lovemaking between the two was very much about him. John’s feelings towards Jamie have long been a source of pain for him. Claire, who has a more modern sensibility, has no qualms with John’s sexuality. Jamie, upon finding out about the infidelity, attacked John, bloodying the other man’s face. Since he’s had his blood and given Claire a cold shoulder, one can see why Claire is “over it.”

John and Jamie’s reunion at the end of season 7 renewed the tension between the trio, showing that not all is forgiven. Claire’s own attentions are split between the present and the past, when news of her daughter Faith, who died in childbirth, arrives in the form of a prophetic dream. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is proud of the final season, despite the tall order of delivering to the fans, “[It] kept him[me] up at night.”

While their feelings still need to be sorted out, the romantasy epic continues to sprawl from the 18th to 20th century, involving time travel, lost love, and family. Season 8 will primarily adapt the ninth book in Gabaldon’s series titled Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone with the final season of the epic tale focusing on the American Revolution arriving at Fraser’s Ridge with the return of familiar faces and new threats to the life Jamie and Claire have built.

Outlander returns to Starz on Friday, March 6, 2026.
