Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is eyeing former captain and the country’s highest Test run getter Younis Khan to take over as head of the domestic cricket department, according to sources. A reliable source aware of the development said PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was keen on having Younis for the important post of Director Domestic Cricket. “Khurrum Niazi who is a career bureaucrat and currently heads the domestic department has been posted in Islamabad and will report soon for his new assignment. Which is why the board is looking at Younis to take over as Director Domestic cricket,” the source said.

He said Khurrum, who was brought in on deputation like other bureaucrats into the PCB, ran the domestic cricket department for over two years.

“Naqvi now wants a proper experienced cricketer to manage domestic cricket affairs which remains a source of debate in Pakistan cricket,” the source stated.

He said the PCB would only announce Younis’ appointment when he signs a contract with the Board. Currently, negotiations are taking place.

The 48-year-old Younis, who appeared in 118 Tests and 265 ODIs, is the only Pakistani player to score over 10,000 Test runs and has worked in the past as batting coach of the national side.

But, he left the role after developing difference of opinion with some Board officials.
