HBO’s The Pitt, features many wide-ranging, in-depth characters, such as Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), “the emotional center,” Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball) returning from rehab, and impactful nurses like Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa). Recently, though, it’s medical student, Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez) and veteran ER nurse, Mateo Diaz (Jalen Thomas Brooks) who have been making headlines.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, Brooks addressed fan questions about a possible Mateo-Javadi romance, saying that between seasons, their characters would, “definitely have hung out.”
Jalen Thomas Brooks: [They’ve] definitely gone out for coffee… I think that there’s a mutual interest.
Brooks’ comments suggest that Mateo is not only aware of the fourth-year med student, but that their bond could deepen throughout the season, a sentiment fans are likely to delight in, with many “shippers” of the pair parsing for clues to confirm a potential love connection.
Fans first caught wind that something might be going on between the pair when they first met, with Mateo noticing Javadi, and Javadi subsequently making her interest known. Although Mateo has had a rule against dating co-workers, wanting to keep work relationships professional, the “mutual interest” suggests that Mateo might go against his long-standing boundary and try things out with Javadi.
Brooks followed up on their connection saying:
And since we’ve been around each other in the same workspace for a while, for close to a year at this point, I would say that there’s a little bit of attention on both ends of, “We see each other. I know you’re here.” I think Mateo is acknowledging her, he’s not going to brush it off of being like, “Oh, I don’t date in the workplace.” I think he’s like, “No, she knows what she’s doing. She’s around. She’s a possibility.” So I think it might not be platonic. I think they could grow into something for sure.
Brooks’s description of Mateo and Javadi’s dynamic suggests a relationship less defined by overt romance and more by a strong connection. Rather than a fast spark, he frames their connection as something that has developed over time in the shared space of the hospital. And though Brooks said things between Mateo and Javadi are still “grow[ing] into something,” their relationship exists in a space that isn’t fully platonic, but also not defined, leaving room for it to continue moving forward.
With The Pitt season 2 in full swing, conversations like this continue to highlight how much more character development is in store, with Dr. Robby’s, and many important characters’ futures, largely unknown, making this slow-burning relationship an exciting storyline for fans to keep an eye on.
The Pitt airs Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
