In case you missed it, from April 2, 2026, PlayStation is increasing the price of various hardware, including the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. Sony puts this decision down to “pressures in the global economic landscape”. Now, gamers subscribed to PlayStation Plus are discussing the implications of these changes in price, and if there’ll be more to come.
Is PlayStation Plus Getting A Price Hike?
Watch this space
At the time of writing, it’s important to note that no PlayStation Plus price hike has been officially confirmed, but many gamers feel it’s inevitable. Over on the PlayStation Plus subreddit, users are pointing out that PS Plus prices went up not long after the last PlayStation 5 price increase back in August last year.
“We all know what’s coming right? It happened last time,” one gamer writes. “Price of console goes up, 2-3 months later, price of PS Plus goes up. They’ve been advertising a PS Plus discount for Easter recently… Expect another $5 increase across all tiers, or buy PS Plus for the next two years and wait it out.”
Of course, as many have pointed out in response, giving Sony hundreds of dollars upfront might not really be teaching them a lesson. Indeed, some are suggesting they’ll probably cancel their PS Plus subscriptions if prices do go up again.
“I’d recommend the better approach is canceling PS Plus and any other subscription services, vote with your wallet. That’s the only way these companies learn their greed won’t be tolerated,” one subscriber responded. “Just buy your games, own something and enjoy it, play it, then buy the next one.”
The new PlayStation pricing is as follows:
- PS5 – $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
- PS5 Pro – $899.99
- PlayStation Portal – $249.99
While we would hope this unexpected and unwelcome price increase means we won’t have to see a PlayStation Plus price increase, we can’t rule anything out at the moment. Interestingly, as PlayStation prices continue to increase, there’s talk of Xbox lowering the cost of Xbox Game Pass. Xbox is in a very interesting position here, where it could sit back and do nothing and somehow come out on top. We’ll have to see how this one plays out.
For now, PlayStation Plus pricing remains in a safe place, and we should learn about the free PlayStation Plus Essential games for April next week. Watch this space.
