Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Kaynes Semicon’s outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility at Sanand on March 31, marking the third semiconductor-related inauguration in the fast-emerging industrial cluster near Ahmedabad in Gujarat.

The ₹3,300-crore facility, approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2024 under the India Semiconductor Mission, has an estimated capacity to produce around 60 lakh chips per day once fully operational. The upcoming inauguration follows a series of rapid developments in Sanand, which is transitioning from an automobile manufacturing base into a semiconductor hub. The region has already seen the launch of a major ATMP facility by Micron Technology earlier this year, while another OSAT unit by CG Semi has also been inaugurated, positioning Sanand as a key node in India’s semiconductor ambitions.

The event will also mark the formal launch of the company’s Multi-Chip Module (MCM). Few months ago, Kaynes Semicon in a social media post stated that it has already rolled out and shipped 900 Multi-Chip Modules (IPM5), assembled, tested and quality cleared at the Sanand facility to Alpha & Omega Semiconductor (AOS), USA .

The Gujarat government stated that the Kaynes facility will further strengthen the ecosystem by adding OSAT capabilities—an essential part of the semiconductor value chain involving testing and packaging of chips before they are shipped to end markets. Highlighting the pace of execution in India’s semiconductor push, Modi had earlier pointed to the quick turnaround of the Micron project, noting that processes that typically take years globally were completed in under 900 days.

Gujarat now accounts for four of the 10 major projects approved under the Centre’s semiconductor programme so far. Meanwhile, the businessline has already reported that Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd has mobilized over 7,000 personnel to construct India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat.Tata Electronics along with Taiwan’s PSMC is constructing a ₹91,000+ crore AI-enabled semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera.
