Pokémon Fans Torn Over Bizarre Transfer Issues In Gen 10

The upcoming release of Pokémon Winds and Waves is the source of a lot of hype in the Pokémon community right now, but the latest piece of info casts a bit of a damper on affairs. Transferring Pokémon between games can be one of the most enjoyable parts of being a dedicated fan, and, sadly, part of the Pokémon Winds & Wavesplayer base may find themselves unable to do so.

An X post from CentroLeaks shares that language data will put certain limits on transferring Pokémon between games, interfering with transfers fromWinds and Waves to older titles. The biggest issue will be the release of the games in Brazil, as Winds and Waves will be the first time that the mainline games support Brazilian Portuguese. Consequently, Pokémon caught in that language will be completely incompatible with transfers to previous games.

Pokémon Transfers Might Get Complicated In Gen 10

This naturally doesn’t affect users in other regions as much as users in Brazil, but it could still have some impact on other regions due to trades. X user TallonOverlord asked for clarification on what would happen if a Pokémon was received in a Wonder Trade from Brazil, and CentroLeaks confirmed that this would make it impossible to transfer to older games.

Some fans are decidedly unhappy with this situation, and X user Johnmogus even questions Game Freak’s approach to programming due to the limitation. A simple fix might not be possible, as ensuring compatibility could require updates to previous games or a total reworking of how Pokémon’s language data functions, but the popularity of the franchise has led some to suggest that the effort would be worthwhile.

We Still Don’t Have A Gen 10 Release Date

At any rate, this particular problem won’t be affecting any users this year. No release date for Pokémon Winds and Waves has yet been revealed, but we do know that it won’t be coming until 2027. There’s always a chance that Game Freak could figure out a solution to the language-based transfer issue in the meantime, but I won’t be holding my breath.

It’s at least nice to know this information in advance, as finding out only when attempting a transfer after the launch of Pokémon Winds and Waves would be a lot more frustrating. The inclusion of Brazilian Portuguese is a step forward for the franchise overall, and it’s far from the first time that transfers between games have had limits. It’s just unfortunate that its implementation in the Gen 10 games has to come with such a significant caveat.
