Pokémon Wind & Waves Leak Unveils First New Type Since 2013’s Fairy

The announcement of Pokémon Winds & Waves as part of the franchise’s 30th Anniversary celebrations was met with a lot of excitement, even though the leaks had already made it quite clear that’s probably what we were getting.

Though we got a good look at the game as part of that, we don’t actually know too much about it, in terms of finer details. We know that it will take place in a sprawling open world dominated by water, with plenty of different islands for the player to explore.

The starters were also confirmed, and most agreed that Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua were pretty adorable final designs for Game Freak to have settled on. Outside of that, we only really have what we can glean from leaks, and the footage we’ve seen so far, but there is one exciting potential avenue that could see a totally new type of Pokémon introduced to the game.

Is Pokémon Getting Its First New Type Since Fairy?

Over on Twitter/X, the usually reliable Centro Leaks shared a status about a new type of Pokémon that will seemingly be introduced in Pokémon Winds & Waves.

“There appears to be a new mechanic / type of special Pokémon in Gen 10 called Seed Pokémon. A baby Pokémon of the Seed species that can be found in resort areas. (Seed Pokémon = unevolved form. It is a rare sight in this land, and no one has ever seen its evolved form. When it travels to the island where the main legendary resides, it begins to evolve. Its evolved appearance is said to have infinite variations.”

It’s a very interesting prospect, and while it isn’t clear if it entirely counts as a new type (as the seed Pokémon could evolve into existing types), it certainly is a brand-new approach to creatures and their evolutions.

It would mark the first time fans have seen a big introduction to the existing pantheon since the very popular Fairy-type was added to the franchise, all the way back in 2013.

Pokémon Winds & Waves Could Represent A Major Change

In a post sharing that revelation on Reddit, fans shared their own thoughts about what exactly this implementation could look like, and almost all agreed that it’s set to mark a huge change for the way the games work moving forward.

“This is like a Baby Mew, or a Proto-Arceus. What GameFreak wants to do is make ALL players start with the same Pokémon, but allow EACH player to evolve it into whatever partner they want for the rest of the game’s adventure,” one comment read.

“I feel like i remember a “tera leak” where Pokémon toyed with the idea of a customizable Pokémon. So maybe this could be that idea coming to fruition?” another added.

Whatever it does end up being, it would undoubtedly represent a major change of strategy, and an exciting path for Pokémon Winds & Waves to go down when they eventually do release next year.
