Who needs Olaf when Yoshi is around? Hollywood is asking itself this very question in the wake of Super Mario‘s box office success. Video games are big business in every industry, and the team at Prime Video is ready to capitalize on the hype. After all, the streaming service has quietly positioned itself to be this generation’s leader in video game adaptations.
While Hollywood’s reputation for video games is mixed at best, recent years have been kind to the genre. Nintendo’s partnership with Illumination to bring Mario to theaters brought in over $1 billion USD. From film to television, video game adaptations are making waves with hits like The Last of Us (HBO Max) bringing home prestigious awards. Prime Video wants in on the excitement, and it has a number of shows in the work to prove it.
Prime Video Has Several Exciting Video Game Show Adaptations In Development
Frankly, the list of video game projects in development for Prime Video is impressive. Just look at what’s in store:
Life Is Strange: Released in 2015, Life Is Strange is a critical darling that takes fantasy mystery to a new level. The game follows a photography student who reunites with an estranged fan after gaining the ability to rewind time. Emotional and anxiety-inducing, Life Is Strange was optioned for a TV adaptation in 2025 after studios LuckyChap and Story Kitchen convinced publisher Square Enix to license the IP.
Warhammer 40,000: If you haven’t heard of Warhammer, buckle in. The longstanding franchise began in 1987, and it has released so many projects that even die hard fans struggle to keep count. Originally a tabletop RPG, Warhammer 40,000 follows an array of heroes and villains pitted in an intergalactic war involving monsters, demons, and more. In 2022, reports confirmed a TV adaptation of Warhammer 40,000 was in the works, and mega-fan Henry Cavill was attached to star and executive produce the project.
Mass Effect: In 2007, Mass Effect upended the sci-fi genre with its groundbreaking action and thrilling story. It is no surprise reports surfaced in 2024 confirming Amazon’s interest in the IP as development got underway on an adaptation. Doug Jung was tapped to run the ambitious series following their work on Star Trek Beyond, and work is ongoing on the upcoming title.
Wolfenstein: In July 2025, reports confirmed Wolfenstein was in production with Amazon MGM Studios, targeting the hit ’90s franchise. The game is often hailed as the prototype for modern first-person shooters, and Wolfenstein‘s action-packed story is known for its unflinching brutality.
God of War: Few games are more iconic than God of War, and it has held such prestige since its debut in 2005. Hollywood has been working on adapting this action RPG since 2022, but a number of issues kept the show from fruition. Now, production is underway on God of War with a full cast and creative team at the helm following a long wait.
Tomb Raider: Thanks to Amazon, Lara Croft will get another go in Hollywood before long. Tomb Raider is one of Prime Video’s next big projects with producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge on call. The iconic franchise has tapped Sophie Turner to play Lara, bringing another A-list actor into the heroine’s legacy. At this time, no firm release date has been shared for Tomb Raider, but filming got underway on the series in January 2026.
Prime Video Already Has Two Notable Video Game Shows
With several high-profile video game adaptations in the works, Prime Video is ready to become the industry’s leader. It also helps that the streaming service has experience with such projects. Right now, you can binge Secret Level and Fallout on Prime Video as the original series are major hits for Amazon.
Released in 2024, Secret Level is a true love letter to gaming. The anthology delves into a number of iconic video games through one-off stories, exploring the worlds of Mega Man, The Outer Worlds, Pac-Man, Dungeons & Dragons, and more. With one season under its belt, Secret Level is an easy watch for video game lovers, and the same can be said for Fallout.
After all, Prime Video broke all expectations with Fallout. The series, which now has two seasons on hand, is a bold dissection of war and humanity. Starring Walter Goggins and Ella Purnell, Fallout is what happens when you let artistic freedom meet authentic fandom. The hit series put Prime Video on the map in the same way The Last of Us did for HBO Max. And now, Amazon is ready to level up its reputation with a slew of ambitious new video game adaptations.
