Prime Video’s 8-Part Cyberpunk Thriller Series Is One Of Its Best

Although Prime Video has produced a lot of great sci-fi shows in the years since its cancellation, the streaming service’s most exciting cyberpunk series only lasted eight episodes. Sci-fi TV is going through an interesting era in 2026. On one hand, the genre’s future could be in peril, as there are currently no Star Trek shows onscreen for the first time since 2017.

On the other hand, the cyberpunk sub genre is clearly flourishing, as evidenced by a glance at the slate of titles upcoming on major streaming services. Prime Video’s Blade Runner: 2099 is one of the year’s most exciting shows, as is Apple TV’s upcoming William Gibson adaptation Neuromancer. Ironically, however, Prime Video itself already canceled an iconic existing cyberpunk series, The Peripheral.

The Peripheral Was Prime Video’s Best Cyberpunk Series So Far

Based on Neuromancer author William Gibson’s 2014 novel of the same name, The Peripheral debuted in 2022. The eight-episode series starred Chloë Grace Moretz, Jack Reynor, and Katie Leung in the twisty story of Flynn Fisher, a gamer with a link to a secret alternate reality. The Peripheral’s plot was split between two timelines.

The Peripheral’s dystopian vision of 2032 and the show’s post-apocalyptic 2099 ensured that, like all the best cyberpunk stories, the show was both a thriller and an immersive sci-fi epic. However, The Peripheral’s one-season run meant that the cyberpunk show barely had a chance to establish both its settings before its story was already prematurely over.

Despite its tragically early cancellation, The Peripheral still often trends on Prime Video, and it is easy to see why the show remains popular with viewers. It was a very promising cyberpunk series with a killer cast and a lot of promise. The world of Gibson’s source story invited further exploration, which made the show’s brevity devastating.

Sadly, The Peripheral’s swift end proved that even the most ambitious streaming shows are always at risk of an early, unplanned ending. Directed by Splice’s Vincenzo Natali, who went on to helm episodes of The Last of Us season 3, and written by The Ruins screenwriter Scott B. Smith, The Peripheral could have been a mainstream audience’s introduction to the cyberpunk sub genre.

Instead, like many of Prime Video’s underrated sci-fi shows, the series lasted only one season before its sudden end. It is unlikely that The Peripheral will be revived for a second outing anytime soon, although its popularity on the streaming service’s offerings proves the show had both plenty of existing fans and plenty of untapped potential in its intriguing story.
