Project Hail Mary’s Early Release May Not Hinder Oscars Chances Amid Recent Trend

Project Hail Mary is generating buzz for next year’s Oscars, and a recent trend proves it could be an early contender. The 2026 Oscars were only recently announced, but Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s new sci-fi film is already starting discussions about its potential at next year’s ceremony.

Based on the novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary is a major critical hit, earning a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, the sci-feature had a stellar opening weekend, grossing $80.5 million domestically and $140.9 million worldwide. It’s one of 2026’s biggest hits and best-reviewed films.

The Ryan Gosling-led film did release about a year before the next Oscars. However, a four-year-long trend at the Academy Awards has shown that films don’t necessarily have to release during awards season to earn nominations.

The Oscars Are Including More Films That Release Earlier In The Year

Traditionally, movies with awards ambitions release during the fall to stay relevant in voters’ minds. However, in the last four years, the Oscars have included more films that were released earlier in the year, and those films are performing well, receiving many nominations and wins.

Sinners released on April 18, 2025, and earned 16 nominations at the 2026 Academy Awards, becoming the most Oscar-nominated film ever. While it lost Best Picture to One Battle After Another, it still won four Academy Awards, including Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

At the 2025 Academy Awards, Dune: Part 2 was nominated for five Oscars. It won two Oscars, one for Best Sound and the other for Best Visual Effects. The film was released on March 1, 2024, and its significant critical acclaim made it a notable contender during award season.

In 2024, Barbie and Oppenheimer were major contenders at the Academy Awards. Both films combined for 21 total nominations, with Barbie winning one and Oppenheimer winning seven, including Best Picture. While the films were both released closer to awards season on July 21, 2023, summer blockbusters aren’t always represented at the Oscars.

Another recent Oscar winner that released early is Everything Everywhere All At Once. The film was released in theaters on April 8, 2022, and won big at the 2023 Academy Awards. It was nominated for an impressive 11 Oscars, and won seven, including Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Picture.

There are other films that were released earlier in the year and were well-represented at the Oscars, but it’s starting to become a more frequent trend.
