Resident Evil Poll Proves Capcom Is Overlooking Its Best Characters

Resident Evil Requiem has already received plenty of praise for bringing back several protagonists from the past,, like Sherry Birkins, Alyssa Ashcroft, and most notably, Leon Kennedy as a playable protagonist, but it’s still a drop in the bucket for Resident Evil‘s playable characters. While it’s impossible to include everyone without bloating the experience, a recent poll proved that a few fan-favorite characters are long overdue for another chance in the spotlight.

As reposted by several users, including bastkennedy on X, Capcom hosted a recent games showcase for Requiem in Indonesia, which included a board where visitors could place a dot on their favorite playable character from the franchise. While it was unsurprising to see so much love for Leon, it was more shocking to see Ada Wong and the faceless Ethan Winters beating out several staples of the franchise, like Jill and Claire, respectively.

These Characters Seriously Deserve More Attention From Capcom

With the results extending far beyond the event itself, there’s been no shortage of mixed reactions to the localized community poll, with cheers for underrated characters like Rosemary and Carlos contrasting with disappointment that one-off main protagonists like Jake and Sheva didn’t get the love fans wholeheartedly believe they deserve.

While it’s not hard to understand that these lesser-known characters would have received more love if attendees could vote for multiple characters at once, given how massive its playerbase has become, fans have made it clear which characters are still going strong all these years later.

Although Ethan Winter’s getting plenty of votes isn’t that shocking, given he has two entire games dedicated to himself, what surprised fans the most was that he still managed to beat out several major characters like both Chris and Claire Redfield. Despite plenty of arguments over his online popularity, the poll results have only added more fuel to the fire that Ethan has been massively overlooked by Capcom’s marketing since Resident Evil 8.

Resident Evil Has Ignored Its Fan-Favorite Characters For Too Long

A Difficult Balancing Act For The Long-Running Horror Franchise

With arguments already sparking over which characters from the franchise deserve the chance to be the protagonist of Resident Evil 10, there’s clearly a demand for several characters, like Ada Wong or Carlos, to at least be officially referenced, even if they can’t make the cut as a playable character once again.

Despite not appearing in several entries, Ada Wong has surprisingly managed 7 appearances as a playable character across the franchise.

With Jill still heading the charge as one of the most requested to return in a starring role, there’s also a chance that more STARS members like Rebecca could also get brought back into the spotlight of the games for a change, or even offer an ensemble cast that resembles a scaled-down version of Resident Evil 6.

Even if Resident Evil 6 turned out to be a disaster for the franchise, it feels like it’s been more than long enough to see the major players of the current story arc team up against a greater threat, or at least set up a similar event for the future of the franchise.

Although Resident Evil Requiem managed to include a surprising number of familiar faces in its groundbreaking new outing, Resident Evil‘s protagonists still face the revolving door problem with its villains, which Capcom still has a chance to correct in the upcoming release of Resident Evil 10, even if it’s nearly impossible to include everyone at this point.
